collecting the pools.
I had previously warned a few of the lads that I would be doing a feature
on this boundary so everyone was up for this match, the match was to be
fished 10am to 3pm and the draw had been at 8am sharp so there was ample
time to set up,I assembled a waggler, bagging wag and an inline method
feeder, I was tempted to set up the pole as the method for the roach is to
fish caster shallow however still getting a few post op twinges I
declined.
My plan of attack was to be waggler and banded pellet and big
waggler if they moved out of range with the bagging waggler as back up,
the fishery is quite small and I suppose it could hold over 30 pegs, still
you get a good view of what's occurring and can switch tactics if
needed. With the whistle blown and the match under way I started to feed a
few pellets about 4/5 pellets regular at about 4 rod lengths, my mainline
was 4lb Berkley sensithin which a few of the Dorking lads use at gold, it
is a clear line and fairly robust and cheap, I was using a Normark
titan 2000, Drennan loaded brown waggler, and a size 16 Preston PR22 hook,
now these hooks are a peculiar shape and look like the top of a coat
hanger, but they are very good sharp and penetrative because of there
shape you will need a disgorger to remove them more often than not even
though they are barbless and of a relatively fine wire, a very good hook
which I rate highly for the waggler an pellet.

After a few minutes feeding pellet the rod flew round and I was into my
first carp around 3lb, as the day progressed I had picked off the odd fish
however the fishery was not fishing as well as had been expected and apart
from the angler to my right, Steve Hardy, who was catching the odd fish on
the method feeder the rest of those fishing the ressy looked like a
picture of still life, it was a strange day with the sun shining at first
to be replaced by cloud and overcast conditions, as the day continued the
wind seem to increase and was blowing right to left and more
importantly blowing my waggler off line, constantly recasting and feeding
bought the odd fish and eventually it looked as if the fish had backed
off, as I had been fishing around 3ft deep, with the lack of bites I
immediately deepened off, this brought me a couple of extra fish before
this dried up, a change to the big wag brought me one more, and I was now
swapping between two lines although still loose feeding the main line
with pellet, after half an hour in desperation I threw out the bagging
waggler and must have shocked a last gasp carp to feed, that was my last
carp and I spent the last hour of the match bite less. Now it was rather
strange that as soon as I stopped to catch the angler to my left Paul
Holland who had been mainly bite less started to catch a few! It appears
that the increasing wind had blown my fish away. In actual fact he
continued fishing after the match and was slaying them as I said my
farewell.

Paul Holland started to catch like this
one a chuck albeit after the whistle
Anyway the weigh in commenced with two sets of scales to make it easy and
quick, eventually the scales came to me and I weighed in 69lb
6oz's,following the scales Don Gray had weighed in 58lb,but Sean Brennan
had 17 carp but no one knew what weight.
Don Gray, 2nd place with 58lb, a man of mystery,
but the best bait man I have ever come across at fishermans cabin.
Back in the car park all was revealed Sean 's carp were fairly small and
he weighed 51lb for 3rd and I had managed a win on my first match on
discharge from hospital, and the great thing was the gear was ferried to
an from my peg, thanks lads. Now the flyer well although Steve Groves
hooked five carp he also lost them and dry netted, still he wasn't to
displeased as he picked up half of my win. The team result well as usual
the cabin had some ringers from Hayes and won the day, as usual
we had to console ourselves with the fact that we won the lions share of
the dosh and 3 section winners out of 4. Defeat is such a bitter pill to
swallow, another year of abuse from the cabin, still a great bunch of
lads, and lets face it you can't beat the crack! Roll on next years match.
Part of a match winning haul by yours
truly
The
three amigos JB, me and Sean Brennan we may not have won the day but we
took the lions share of the dosh each winning our sections.
