Club Angler Of The Year

11am " All in" they bellow and the match starts. Kestrel pool starts well. I watch the action for about one minute and can see at least 12 anglers out of the 20 into fish. I look at Skylark and Partridge, the other two pools in action, and see....nothing but blank faces. After a short while back to Clive. He's had a couple of small fish but is struggling, as is the guy next to him. Another walk round and Kestrel still way out in front, lots of small fish being caught, Skylark and Partridge still slow to respond. Back to Clive Still struggling. Down to the cafe smashing lunch, round again. Kestrel now slowing, Skylark and Partridge picking up, back to Clive still struggling Guy next to him, who was the previous days winner by the way, bagging! I know when I'm not wanted. Round again, the word is spreading that the guy on Peg 16 Partridge is now bagging big time, off to take a look. Yeah he's doing well catching down the inside on pellet and corn.

Over Again to Clive, break him the news, not impressed. Sit in the baking sun for 20 minutes, can't take the heat any more, off for a walk. Ken Russell on Kestrel 14 is catching well, but so is the guy on peg 13 who has reportedly landed a 10llb carp. Ken is working hard to catch him but it's going to be difficult.

Mr N. Lloyd, Final winner.

Partridge and Skylark are now beginning to produce some bigger specimens and with half an hour to go, you can tell it's going to be close. Mr Lloyd on Partridge 16 is still catching well, but so is Simon Richardson on Skylark 13 who is getting the better stamp. Back to Clive he has found fish late on and is starting to catch regularly.

Four pm and the end of the match is called. I follow the scales around Partridge, the first lake to be weighed. They reach Peg 16 and Mr Lloyd weighs 58-5-0. Around they go to Peg 21 and Mr P. Slee weighs 49-11-0. Across to Skylark and Simon weighs 52-10-0, which is the best weight off that pool. The only anglers who can stop Mr Lloyd is now either Ken on Kestrel 15 or Mr P. Close on Peg 13. The scales man calls 40-9-0 for Ken and 46-8-0 for Mr Close. The final weighs take place and Mr Lloyd is declared the winner. As for Clive he weighed 27-10-0 and tied with the guy next to him. The best weights off Partridge and Skylark came off the opposite end of the Pool to Clive, but it could have so easily been the other way round. Congratulations go to all the finalists for qualifying and it goes without saying to Mr N. Lloyd who won the match. He apparently put that much time and effort in learning the venue, that he fully deserves the credit for travelling over 200 miles, round trip every week.

Top 3 Results on Final Day were: 1st N Lloyd, Grove Park, 58-5-0, 2nd S Richardson, Wolves West End, 3rd, P.Slee, Gipping Valley, 49-11-0

I would also like to thank the organisers Kevin Wilmot, Mac Campbell, Ricky Teale and Barry from Eltons tackle for putting a great match together. I believe the same match is being held at the same venue next year. If it is, all you club anglers out there try and qualify, it's an experience you will never forget.

Gary Simon Richardson
Finalist 2nd
Wolves West End.
