Western Intersite Match Results at Hillview Fishery Saturday 25th August 2007

Myself and Bonehillstar arrived at the fishery around 8-40 to find Bad Boy Bagger, Bagging Up Art and Kleinboet taking the sun on the cafe veranda, we were soon joined by MartynH and Paulscatt, a quick chat and it was time to peg the three canal we would be fishing, it was evident that plenty of the better carp were also enjoying the sun and might prove to be a bit difficult to catch especially as no floating baits or floating poles were allowed, but given the luxury of a few spare pegs it was hoped we would all catch a few, with the pegging completed it was back to the cafe to sort out how many were likely to turn up as all sites were forecasting being at least one angler short, this turned out to be the case and by the time of the draw only some 24 out of a possible 30 anglers were present, at the suggestion of the Maggot Drowners captain it was agreed that one of the TA team would fish for Total Fishing, and as I fished for TF at the Midlands match I agreed to represent them again. Would my points give TF a victory over TA again only time would tell.
After sorting out the weigh sheets and prize money it was time for a quick cup of tea and unload my gear to find my way to peg 15 about half way along canal 3, with an aerator in between myself and Clive of Maggot Drowners I was optimistic that one or two lumps might put in an appearance, with the canals not being that wide the only method would be the pole and two swims tight over an a margin line was set up with another rig for fishing shallow, I think I was still setting up the second rig at the time of the all in, never mind I was fishing for TF, eventually I cupped in a pot of pellets and meat on the two far bank lines and pellet down the margin so it was over to the far bank with meat on the hook the float settled and a few seconds later away it went and a tiny tench was no match for the 15h elastic, another soon followed happy days at least I am catching, another small pot of pellet and meat was deposited and shortly after something a bit bigger was attached and was stretching the elastic it turned out to be a common of about 2lb that was foul hooked but safely landed, another small tench and a 1oz carp followed soon after, I can hear Malc the Jinx on canal 4 telling Mark C that he's catching on corn but nothing worth his normal shout and was still waiting for a proper one. Things had gone a bit quiet on my far bank line so a quick look at the line near the aerator was called for 15 mins yielded nothing so back to the far bank line to find a couple of the small carp before latching into something that was a lot bigger only for it to become unattached and a single scale hanging from the hook. The next hour or so sees a continuation of the odd one or two small tench and carp take the float under so its time to have a look at the margins, the odd dip of the float showed there were fish there but not really having it, even a maggot did not produce a positive bite still there was still time for the margin line to produce. With no one really catching on canals 2 and 3 it looked like it was going to be a low weight match maybe the sudden rise in temperature was putting the fish down, Malc had decided that if he was not going to catch any real fish he would catch the sun and was down to his shorts, fortunately Malc was obscured from my view by a tree on the bank between canal 3 and 4, just about in my view were Pete Bailey TF, Roysty and Mark C who were all having some netter fish and with Matt6900 also putting the net under a few it looked like TA were fairing OK but time would tell.
I was still nicking the odd fish albeit small off the far bank line so stuck on that till the last hour when an all-out attack on the margins was called for had any lumps turned up, as in the earlier look the float did briefly dip a few times but nothing became attached, scaling down to an 18 hook saw me have a run of 10 or so small tench and carp but nothing worth putting the net under all coming to a 4mm expander, with the fish being so small estimating a weight was not easy but for sure I would have been happy to have accepted ten pounds.
Time to set up the scales and do the weigh in with help from Malc and Lee Richards ( MD ) and Matt6900 thanks lads your help was appreciated canals 2 and 3 were soon weighed in Steve May and Matt 6900 recorded the best weights and each won their canals, I was sure that canal 4 had fished better and so it proved to be with the top three weights coming off it with TA man Royst just gaining a match victory over Fordy1, well done Roysty and many thanks to all who fished from TA.
With the points totted up Total Fishing clinched victory by 2 points from Maggot Drowning with TA a further 2 points behind them, did my points help TF yes they did I scored 2, add my 2 points to TA and it would have been a three way tie, but hey its only a fishing match and just maybe next year I might get to fish for us.
