We definately over complicate things and also don't fish positively enough.

As for the hook in the loop method I think it is a combination of the no8 shot and the way that the hook can swivel and turn into the fishes mouth, the other side of the coin however is that you are having to fish an eyed hook which can never be as light as the same hook in a spade end pattern. Line diameter also comes into the equasion as you have two pieces of line either side of the hook.
