I have both Shimano Baitrunners and Fox Stratos 7000 series, and the Fox reels are every bit as good as the Shimanos. I havent particularly looked after them well, they look like theyve been buried in mud for 10 years and they are still as smooth as the first day out of the box. Depending on what sort of waters you are going to fish consider going smaller, the big pit reels are a bit pointless if you are oging to be fishing small waters.

as for rods get the best you can and look at 2nd hand, if you get into it i strongly suspect you will end up wanting to replace cheaper new rods very quickly and end up spending more money than getting better ones first time round. Alternatively see if Shimano are still doing that carp rod and reel deal for £99.99
