I think everything depends on the day and circumstances. Sometimes conditions make it hard to hold a pole i.e if its really windy. Ive floated but only on a couple of occassions when this has been the case. I prefer to hold it when fishing shallow. Using a float as an indicator its easier to tell what level the fish are feeding at in the water. Plus you can work the full depth of the water you are fishing. Fishing the floating pole you are fishing at a set depth.
