Use a suitable/heavy enough plummet for the bottom of the venue i.e. gravel or silt.
Search out the swim for holes, snags and features (this is a must).
Find the dead depth of your chosen swim (see pic below) and then mark up against your pole like craig said above.

So now when you are fishing you can alter the depth and always have guide to refer to.
