we had a problem up here at folly lake and after speaking to the owner he knew it was caused by a batch of infected stock fish 18 months earlier. apparently it only affected the existing fish i persume the stock fish were immune to the virus. he cured it with e.a. help by banging loads of medicinal pellets in. i dont buy the low oxygen theory obviously it doesnt help but usually when levels are low fish will refuse to feed as they instinctively know they will have trouble digesting food and become inactive till levels rise. i reckon those initial deaths are from fish which may have gorged on food then are hit with low levels while they are full of indigested food.
but i am in agreement match fishing has gone numbers mad tons double tons etc on commercials....i adore my winter fishing ....natural venues only....hard work ..lots of bites..... but few headlines. the press promote this ton up mentality and yes closer scrutiny would be damaging but a fishing match is a fishing match ...as my mate used to say he would rather come first with 1lb then 2nd with 40lb. match fishing should be about winning therefore 3lb of gudgeon winning a match on the local canal should have the same qudos as 150lb winning on a commercial ...but it doesnt to most.
