A very interesting discussion. I personally dont mind boats as long as they keep to the speed limits and stay in the centre of the canal. I'm sure that at times the boats can have a positive effect by clouding the water.
The worst experience I had was on the river trent. I was standing in my waders in the river when a boat came past so fast that the bow wave came up over my waders and half my gear was washed away. The problem is, as in all walks of life its the minority that spoil things for the majority.
Interesting to read about the difficulty of steering a boat at low speed, never considered that before but I suppose its obvious if all you've got is a rudder.
