Fairhill House Hotel is a hive of activity after the long winter, as we prepare to welcome the fishermen back once more to the west of Ireland. The quaint village of Clonbur, ('An Fhairce' in Irish), is located in Connemara, on the narrow penninsula separating Lough Corrib and Lough Mask.
Using Fairhill House Hotel as your base, you can fish for free on three of Europe's premier trout lakes (Corrib, Mask and Carra). The brown trout season traditionally kicks off in earnest with the Duck-fly hatch in March, followed by the Olive-fly and May-fly hatches in April and May and the Daddy and Grass-hopper hatches in July and August. Excellent fly-fishing opportunities continue right through to the end of September on all three lakes. The much-prized Atlantic Salmon can be caught on th fly on Lough Corrib, (licence required), especially in the reaches between Clonbur and Cong, near Ashford Castle.
Dapping, dry and wet-fly, and trolling are all successful angling techniques on the lakes. On opening day here on February 15th, many fine trout were taken and released, including one 10lb brown trout, a real beauty, caught less than a mile from the Hotel. Pike (up to 34lbs) have been taken here in the past year and in general, the lakes are healthy and are fishing well for all species. Fish stocks in these important limestone lakes are carefully managed and conserved and 'catch and release' is widely encouraged.
Fairhill House Hotel was completely re-furbished in 2001 and boasts 20 spacious en-suite bedrooms, with private balconies, tea and coffee-making facilities, multi-channel TV, phone and free wi-fi internet access. We have a first class restaurant with an award-winning chef. Anglers particularly enjoy our old-world public bar, where we serve food all day and enjoy live music at night. For a quieter moment, you can relax after the day's fishing in the comfortable resident's lounge. Getting here is easy. Knock and Galway Airports are only 40 minutes away by car. Shannon is a 2 hour drive. See
