Skretting Coarse Pellets
Afternoon all
Just a quick question. The lable on my bag of skrettings says that the date the vitamins will be present for expires soon. Does this mean they will be useless after this date? I hope not as I still have a few kilo to use!
Regards
Jon

Probably not!
They are ok to use, but are not as useful a source of vitamins to the fish!
They will still catch you fish mate, but may have lost some of their attraction!

Depends how old they are. Better used within 12 months of purchase.
Certainly throw them if they have been stored where they can get hot or damp or open to the air for any length of time.

old pellets
As steve says the pellets have a "best before" date for the vitamin pack, this means that the vit amd minerals are only garenteed for this period in time.( If the pellets are kept in good conditions where they have not been allowed to dry out or get damp or in direct sunlight, etc). Then the vit and minerals may last longer. The pellets in them selves will not be harmfull unless they are rotten, damp etc, It is always best to use pellets soon after buying them ,(as a higher oil pellet will start to "drop"its oil out of the pellet )but remember that a lot of kg bags sold in shops have not got a best before date on them so how do you know how old they are??
most tackle shops im sure will have a good policy on rotating stock but not all i know.
if you are happy with the conditions that you have kept the pellets in and feel that the pellets are not going to harm the fish you are trying to catch then they will be o.k to feed and use up.
hope this helps

If you put 1 in ur mouth and bite it,if it's relatively soft prob not so good, but if they have been kept, covered /sealed as much as possible they should be nice and crunchy, how long have you had them,?sack only last's me 3-4 month's.

I got 25kg of 4.5mm coarse pellets early May this year and have just noticed the 'best before' date for the vitamins is 23 May 2009! They seem ok, still hard and they smell ok too, just like dynamites XL 4mm feed carp pellets....!
I have put a call in to the shop where I brought them from and plan to ask him to swap what I have left (about 20kg) for a new bag and pay him for the 5kg I used at a KG rate, prorata the cost of 25kg. I dont think that's unreasonable, do you?

As for a shop taking them back, good luck, but not unless you got them to feed fish, ie: fish farm or you are a Koi carp breeder, I doubt if he'll exchange.
these dates are for feeding farmed fish for the table, not for us to catch fish and the reason they look exactly like Dynamites pellets is because they probably are.
The vast majority of pellets are made by Skrettings for fish rearing and they are also sold to Fishing bait firms who then package them for sale to us.
its the same as in the human food................ Best Before, means it is at its best quality for consumption, flavour etc. but you can still eat it after the date if it has been stored correctly.
However, if it was to say....................... Use By, then after that date it should be disposed of.
