Just a point to throw into the frying pan but the colour red is the first colour to become invisible at 10Ft in clear water. In a murky pond, lake, canal or river in flood this happens at much deeper depths. Are you not just relying on plain old maggot smell in a crystal clear water? The most visible colour in murky water is the complete reverse. RED!

Thought you may like this info too.

Water Colour.

Super Clear: White & All colors are visible to 10 feet.
Clear Water: Blue is most visible. White is visible. All colors are slightly visible to 10 feet.
Green Water: Green is most visible.
Stained Water: Orange, green, and chartreuse are most visible. Red is slightly visible.
Muddy Water: Red is most visible.

Light Conditions.

Low Light: Blue, purple or black work best.
Medium Light: Red and orange work best.
High Light: Brown or gray work best. Use with fluorescent accents if possible.

Giles.
