I haven't used cheese much apart from putting it in paste occasionally. As for potato - the only time I have used it is when you need a bait that looks like a pellet that will not break down when on the hook, if you cut it into thin slices and then cut round pellet shaped pieces using a large breadpunch or lunchpunch then you put them all in a bag with some instant coffee and put it into the fridge overnight then you get brown potato pellets which can be hooked and never come off.

I used to watch a bloke when i was a youth called Derek Queen fishing on the Coventry canal at Kettlebrook basin and he swore by cheese. He used to wait till dusk and fish cheese on the hook and catch some clonking roach on it so i copied him and sure enough (I know it was probably 20 years ago) I had 1 lb roach regular fishing just on the bottom with small balls of cheese which i had softened between my fingers before hooking.

The only other time ive used it and seen it used is on the river mease for chub. They also used to love it.

Let me know how you get on if you give it a bash!

Cheese also catchs some good carp, a women on my local lake uses cubes of about 1 inch and she has caught some good fish into double figures.
Also with the potato i have seen Bob Nudd use it to imitate pellets, to colour it he used coffee. It worked and he had carp to about 8lb.

Hope this helps.

Bob Nudd also uses gravy granules to colour his pellet shaped bits of potato, might be worth trying both ways so you have 2 different flavours.

Cheese was the first bait I ever used for chub on the Avon back in the 70s as a kid,we used to sit 4or5 to a peg with nuts n bolts for legers cos we couldnt afford proper leads,we caught fish tho more often than not but there was far more chub back then, these days there are better cheaper baits available than cheese but I expect some still use it-As for spuds ,the old time carp men used to parboil them back in Dick Walkers day and thread them on with a baiting needle.
