Hi Slugsy,
I used to be in Franks Match club when Franks Tackle shop was open in Borehamwood and Ginger Parker etc. was running it. I was also Match Secretary for the Tykes Water AC which has been renting the lake in the picture for well over 60 to 70 years we had a series of 3 matches against Franks Tackle each year and I won or got placed in quite a few matches against Franks. Franks is a great little match club which at one time had a small stretch of the river Ivel in sandy beds but gave it up, but they still visit some nice waters for matches each week and it is a good club to be in as Champion_Poleman will confirm.
I can understand Champion_Poleman thinking that there is not much in Tykes Water as it doesn't respond to more than a few anglers walking round it making the normal match noises but don't be fooled there are some good fish in there (Tench up to around 9lb Bream up to to around 8lb+, Rudd up to around 1.75lb, Crucian Carp up to around 2.5lb) not giants by any means but well worth catching; but you need to be quiet and know when, where and how to fish it.
Yes they have quite a few carp anglers there and you can struggle at times especially when it is hot or when there is a match on but if you know where and when to fish you can catch some nice fish.
If you want to bag up with a netfull of easy fish from an overstocked match lake then its not your kind of water but if you want to catch a few Tench and crucians on the lift method, in peace on a summers evening then apart from Sundays its Ideal.
As well as not being a match lake; It is not a mid day fishery and the best fish generally stay well away from anglers baits until evenings and through to around midnight or very early in the morning (the times when matches are NOT normally fished).
These days I hardly fish Tykes Water as, I also belong to Verulum AC which has some fabulous Barbel fishing on the upper reaches of the Lea and the Ivel and the Gt. Ouse (at Felmersham, Radwell etc.) after the Barbel, so if its river fishing you like then think about joining Verulum, you wont be dissapointed. (
Welcome to Verulam Angling Club )
They have a good match fishing section as well.
The Frogmore that 'Franks' club fishes is not the one that you are thinking about (which is now called Moor Mill) but over the back where 'Handley Pages' used to be. incidentally Moor Mill holds the second largest Leather carp in England - (ToadLess) made famous in a well known Carp Book.
The frogmore that 'Franks' occasionally fish has quite a few smaller Carp up to low doubles in the Match Lake.
Anyway if you want the address of Tykes water Membership secretary give me a shout otherwise Franks is a good small match group who fish some good waters, I'm sure Champion_Poleman will give you details of the Franks Match club.
Best of luck,
Keith (BoldBear)
