Interesting that....
One winter match last year half the lake was frozen over. I didn't draw on the ice but felt sorry for the lads that did. However the eventual winner (with 30lb of silvers) was someone who did draw on the ice & spent the first 30 minutes or so tapping with his pole cup (bit like tapping at a boiled egg with a spoon) & scooping the broken ice to the side. He made himself a channel about 10m from the bank & 1.5m wide. I thought (& still thought until reading this) that he'd just gotten fed up tapping so left it fairly narrow. I also thought at the time that his match was over before it started ! - It was an eye opener for me & I thought he deserved the win.
This is a timely thread as we are on the same lake tomorrow & it had already started freezing over at 3pm this afternoon, if I now draw on the ice I will approach things completely differently to what I intended doing 5 minutes ago !!

P.s. this thread has gone off the original subject a bit & in my humble opinion ought to be moved to the match section. I'd have thought others could find the ice breaking comments very useful, but they may not stumble across them in this section (I nearly didn't)
