Well it looks as though every cloud has a silver lining.

At least some of us old timers will get to catch a decent net of skimmers and roach at Barston now and some people will have to begin to work for their fish.

Not that it's not a terrible thing to have happen, but it's not entirely gloom and doom except maybe for those brainwashed into believing a day's fishing is 100lb net of pigs with fins. Each to their own I guess.

KHV=dry nets before and after the day you fish, even your landing nets.

I would not be surprised to hear of every carp holding fishery having a KHV related scenario sometime in the now or future. As anglers if you suspect that fish you see are dieing from it then you can report it to the EA. It's not just the owner who can/should report it, it's a notifiable disease and shouldn't be ignored.

As for not fishing at places with KHV, I don't think for a minute there's a commi out there that hasn't got it to some degree. THe ones that show it up first are those where the fish are compromised already by overstocking and poor water quality.

Default email from EA on KHV

Hi Geoff

In answer to your question, when fish are ill they need rest, fishing a water that has the disease will only stress the fish more. Also there may be a chance that you pass the infection on to other waters that you may fish at a later date.

My personal advise is NO do not fish while it is infested. Please see statement from EA below.

The Environment Agency does not have the powers to close down fisheries infected by the virus, they have advised all infected premises to cease angling and add their own biosecurity measures to ensure that the disease is contained

I would rather not fish a water that was infested with carp.

There are no fish dead / dying / floating at Barston. This problem started a few weeks ago and has all but blown over now. Carpcruncher (TF) has just been up there and people are catching and he`s seen no sign of fish deaths. If the EA released a statement when it actually started then all well and good but not weeks after!!!! If we as responsible anglers ALWAYS ensured we had dry nets upon arrival to fisheries half these problems wouldn`t arise. Carpcruncher is up there Sunday and I aim to get over BUT I will definately be fishing the Intersite as I honestly believe the threat is over.
You don`t get the all clear that quick but KHV related deaths occur pretty quickly and when water temperatures are between 15-28c..... with temperatures dropping it seems to go away.

I can endorse what WCA has said I was over at Barston two weeks back, and again there were no evidence of dead fish, but as there were really only carpers fishing it is was hard to judge if anyone was catching. There were however plenty of carp surface feeding in the top corner wher the wind was blowing into, and no I was not on a spying mission it was my wifes suggestion that we had a walk round as we were passing nearby, she thought I needed the exercise, me I just went along with the idea and followed it up with a pint in the bar

Fair play to Nigel for keeping every one informed and being honest about the situation.

If every fishery owner had been as honest then Barston may not have been infected in the first place!

Well I am planning to have a few hours down there tomorrow , taking dad as he has not been out for a good few weeks now and I am even rustier than normal . Sorted out some half Carp/half silvers rigs yesterday and checked I have some light(ish) laccies in the pole. Mixed up a bit of stuff for the method so just going for an easy session when my back starts to ache on the pole chuck a pig to the horizon

If the fish are sick i would'nt worry about putting them in a net cause u prob. wont catch them anyway.Barston will still be won with carp next week, but the silver fishing is quite good normally with 15-20 lb possible on most pegs and 30-40 lb on the good pegs on the day.The other week i had chub, roach, skimmers, tench, perch' and a couple of small carp, all on pole and proper feeder.About 70 fish
