At first `expanders` were only made as floaters ,so to get them to sink for feeding or hookbait you would prepare them by simply just covering them with water and leave for 10 or 15 minutes but not all pellets would sink causing fish to follow the loosefeed out of the swim as they floated off.
As they took water on they expanded a little and the air inside them was replaced by water causing them to sink.
Matchmen and carp anglers alike are impatient buggers so someone tried using a vacume pump (made for food purposes originally) and found you could prepare pellets on the bank within 5 mins, it was a good way to also force flavourings into their pellets and the main advantage is that after pumping them 3 or 4 times EVERY pellet would sink.
HOWEVER....
The pellets i use (Dynamite Baits) market a brand of expanders that sink, so just cover these with water, leave for 2 mins and drain the water off and you have good, soft, hookable, SINKING pellets every time.
