Don't buy a rod just for one session, if you have float rod of some kind this will do to get you started as you may not like stick float fishing till you have had a few attempts.
If you like it then treat yourself to a nice stick float rod.

It is a true art form and when practiced till you get it right, you will reap the rewards.
Try a 3lb floating reel line like Drennan float fish on the reel, then use a hooklength of your choice on the business end.
I used to use Bayer Perlon in different sizes but something around the pound mark should be a good starting point for a hooklength.
I liked the John Allerton alloy stickfloats for most of my trotting but it's a personal choice really, also float choice can vairy on the speed and depth of the river your fishing.
A bait apron to put your maggots in and Drennan bait waiter to keep other baits and bits and bobs on are very handy when stickfloat fishing and won't cost the earth.

Also put a bank stick in the waters edge to use as a marker to see if the river is rising or falling as you can alter your rig to suit the changes through the session.
Finally when casting try casting to the side rather than behind your head to avoid tangles, it will also lay your rig in the water neater, buy holding the hook in your hand while flicking the float out in front of you.Don't forget to let go of the hook the second you cast though!!!!
Have a look at this may be of some help on float choice and shotting.
