B N M. best way get a mate that knows how to fish the stick.
failing that the best rod a float rod with a spliced tip. I'm sure someone will disagree
best floats I prefer lignum base with balsa top.
21/2ld main line 1ld hook length, but I only fish for roach.
As a rule of thumb the closer the hook the smaller the shot, I don't use anything larger than a number 8 becase I won't use lead. This time of year hold it back. feed at least once every trot even if only a few maggots or whatever you prefer just remember it's all practice. start practicing start learning

hi billy. i will give the info i was given and brought up with, there are much better qualified anglers who im sure correct me.
rods. stick float rods were/are stiffer than waggler rods. this has to do with the strike. waggler rods have softer tops therefor they give more causing you to sometimes bump fish. i have a shakespeare stick rod which is very stiff compared with my drenim waggler. i have to admit i seldom use the stick rod.

shotting. i was brought up in the days when the trent was king and the master was the late ivan marks ( god bless) he always to my recolection advocated the following. stick floats used only in depths up to 7 foot. shotting button style tapering down ie smallest shot nearest the hook. but with not much difference between shots ( avoiding tangles when casting) idealy on a normal flowing river you could get away with 1 no4 per foot. on faster rivers like the wye 1 bb per foot. im not sure if they,re are any dvd,s by wayne swimscoe ( not sure in spelling) but back in the eighties he was unbeatable on the trent to my recolection could be wrong .

the best stick floats i ever had were dick cleggs set of seven ( i think may have been 4) i treasure them so much i no longer take them out if the house. i tend to use a wire stemmed stick as i fish the upper bristol avon i find they suit me and my style of fishing ( mostly crap) but i have won one or two matches with them. i have to say its my favourite form of fishing. if you want to get the best of a stickfloat fishing go to a small river where you don,t have to cast just lay the float out in a straight line with a centerpin real its unbeatable. hope that helps. by the way stick float fishing is were the bait preceeds the float whereas with the avon the bait follows

Don't buy a rod just for one session, if you have float rod of some kind this will do to get you started as you may not like stick float fishing till you have had a few attempts.
If you like it then treat yourself to a nice stick float rod.
It is a true art form and when practiced till you get it right, you will reap the rewards.

Try a 3lb floating reel line like Drennan float fish on the reel, then use a hooklength of your choice on the business end.
I used to use Bayer Perlon in different sizes but something around the pound mark should be a good starting point for a hooklength.

I liked the John Allerton alloy stickfloats for most of my trotting but it's a personal choice really, also float choice can vairy on the speed and depth of the river your fishing.

A bait apron to put your maggots in and Drennan bait waiter to keep other baits and bits and bobs on are very handy when stickfloat fishing and won't cost the earth.
Also put a bank stick in the waters edge to use as a marker to see if the river is rising or falling as you can alter your rig to suit the changes through the session.

Finally when casting try casting to the side rather than behind your head to avoid tangles, it will also lay your rig in the water neater, buy holding the hook in your hand while flicking the float out in front of you.Don't forget to let go of the hook the second you cast though!!!!

Have a look at this may be of some help on float choice and shotting.
