If you have only got power kits you could try measuring the diameter and then the diameter of a suitable bush for a No 3 elastic. If the bush would fit through your power kit all you need to do is make sure you have your summer elastics are on stora bungs so it does not matter if you cut a bit off and then retie come summer. Get yourself some No 1's (at least a fiver) and set them up with No 3 and suitable bung and poke the No 1 through your power top 2. As you are only sishing for poncy no 3 elastic fish you will be perfectly ok and you will not notice any unbalance in your pole as you will have lighter elastic that will make up foir the addittion of a No 1. Hope you understand, used to do it myself when i started on pole and could not afford lots of tops

I'm lucky enough to have 7 tops, 3 x power & 4 x match. I have recently replaced two no8's with two no.3's in my match tops (I have a 5 & a 6 in the other two) & was just wondering whether putting the no8's in the power tops was a good idea.
Having read the replies though (including yours) instead of tampering with my power tops it would make more sense to leave the 5 & 6 & alternate the 3's & 8's for winter & summer ?

I have to say that using a no.3 has been the single best piece of advice I've had since I started pole fishing (mainly down to you & oneabung but thanks to anyone else that contributed to that thread) .

I honestly believe it will transform my fishing... not that I'll only be fishing with a no.3 from now on but having used it a couple of times I can't believe just how overpowered something like an 8 feels now (which I'd always considered to be light )
Called in for a tin of hemp & some kamasan 22's to 0.07 line ready for the knock-up on Sunday.... wonderful thing this confidence.......
The no.3 experience just gets better !
Had the last choice on the rover today out of 9, wouldn't have normally been that bad but as one side of the lake was getting the full force of the bitter wind everybody opted to fish with the wind on their back which forced me to fish with the wind coming at me sideways & in a not very favourable peg.
Anyway came 7th of 9 with 12lb 10oz, winner had 26lb of small stuff again.
I was catching tiny stuff with the odd better 4oz- 8oz fish & thought I would try a small piece of sweetcorn hoping for a skimmer or bigger roach & ended up with a 4 - 4 1/2 lb carp on a no.3 with 0.07 hooklength, so didn't do that well position wise but a good days learning for me.
I didn't ask, but you don't think the winner would be fishing any finer than 0.07mm do you, not given the chance of a bonus carp over 20lb & tench/bream to about 5lb (& everything in between) ?

In hindsight would I have been better off braving the wind & having one side of the lake to myself ??

Wouldn't dream of going lighter than .8 and probably stick to .10

Need to know more about the fishery Ian. On most commercials, I very rarely drop below 0.08, but stick to 0.10 if there's a good chance of carp.
If you are fishing a more natural lake with an odd carp in, I would probably go down to 0.06. Also depends on water clarity. I feel if the water is clear, line diameter is a vital factor in getting bites. If the water has some colour, hook size/weight is more important.
Perhaps a finer wire hook?

Also, get over to the winner straight away and ask what they've done. They will usually be quite open while they are still revelling in the win. Leave your packing away until everyone has weighed in and you've spoken to all the front runners.
