Hook your hook to the bottom of your top 3, then mark the top of the float, onto the section. As you say, if you trash a rig, you can put a new one on without having to re plumb.
An inch or two is often the killer depth, as can be an inch or two overdepth.
I always mark mine at dead depth.
I like tipex, put on a thick blob, and it flicks off easy after, or the next time you use it.
Do all your tops before the start.
I also often have 2 marks on each top, if i am fishing two swimms that are slightlty differant depths, so you can change rigs, and just move the float for the correct swim.

I use normal kids crayons.Better than tippex as its easier to clean.I think i got the idea from an andy findley article.Red ones show up quite well.Like others have said with tippex my tops looked like xmas trees.

Try a stationary/office supplies store, Staples for example.

You can get two red ones on ebay for £1.50 + £1 P&P.
I'll wait until I go to a stationary shop though cos I only want one & I bet they're only about 50p each...... you'll never get rich by throwing it away.

out of interest would "stabilo all" pencils do the same job?? these are for marking on paper/glass/plastic/metal etc and wipe of with a damp cloth.

Surely if your tops kits have been in the fridge you could just mark the iced top kits as i would of thought they would be too brittle once out of the fridge to nick with a sharp knife (just wandered if it was a swiss army knife or would any knife suffice)
