Default rules and etiquette

Fished a open match at a local fishery the end of last year, even number pegs were used on the day,i drew peg 4,permanent peg 5 was about 9mtrs left (empty obviously)peg 6 is about 13mtrs past peg 5 and was drawn by a local "top"? (legend in his own lunchtime angler) i started plumbing to the pallet on peg 5 and so did he! i said to him you are going too far by doing that, you should only go half way! and the argument started.he then called on the fishery manager to endorse his point of view (you know the sort of thing, ive been coming here for 10 years, thats always been the rule etc etc.......)just wondered what peoples thoughts were! was it bad etiquette, gamesmanship or just plain cheating?

i personally would fish up to the pallet if i wasnt in any body elses way. if i was on an end peg i would cast or use the pole as far as i wanted to away from me. if i was on the middle of a bank then there was anglers either side of me then i would only fish half way between my peg and the next peg.

Two ways of looking at it. Just depends on fishery rules.

1. You have half way between you and the next angler.

2. You have to the next peg.

Personally i think to the next peg.

A slightly different scenario.

A pool is 30m wide, there is an island in the middle that is two metres wide. one side is 16m to the island and the other is 12m to the island.

Using the usual ruling that you can only fish half way across the pool that means the angler on the wider side must not fish any closer than 1m to the island..

Food for thought perhaps.....

So you think even if the pallet was 1mtr away he should be allowed to fish there!!! i think the key to it is the words between anglers and not pegs that were not in the draw bag in the first place! the pallet is irrelevant!! he was over half way,

I agree ABBO If your measurements were correct he should have stopped 2 metres short of the pallet as that would have been halfway.

yes i agree with you that he was over half way. i would look at it like this lets say that peg five was not there at all. so the distance between you and the other chap was 22metres away. so i would say then that you both had 11 metres to play with. how ever his 11 metres does not cover the pallet. where as yours does. so that was in you swim.

Normally the rule is up to the next peg where it is alternate pegging unless otherwise stated before the match so he is correct to fish up to the next empty peg.

However alot of matches I fish they make it so you can only fish to your left down the bank therefore giving everyone a separate inside line.

it should have been sorted before the match considering everyone had an empty pallet either side of them whether to fish to the left or right.... that way there is no prob.... unless someone cant tell their left from right of course.. ha
