Ian you don't say if your fishing up in the water or on the deck, if on the deck I'd prefer to just dump whats in the pot, up in the water I'd go with Oneabung's method of catapult, you only have to practice to be accurate

Was fishing on the deck & using pole pot when the question entered my head, but just wondered what the general advice would be.

Dump it!
I have played with feeding after hooking the fish, and differant ways of dripping etc. Still keep going back to shipping out and feeding right away. I still recon its best, you can judge the feedding better, seeing how long it takes to get the next bite, and seeing how differant amount of bait differs.
