Default Zig Rig on feeder Rod

Im relatively new to angling and am not all that geared up. I mainly course fish but do like the odd bigger carp. I don't have any towing tackle such as bite alarms and stuff and have been looking at ways have getting my bait to sit between the surface and up to 2ft off the top but fixed in one place.

I've seen a zig rig which looks like it could do the trick however im not sure if there is a way to get it to alert regardles of the direction the fish swims in.

Anybody any ideas how to acheive what im wanting. If anyone has diagrams are anything that would be nice as like I said I am quite newb.

A normal tip set up will do the job. Either a wrap around a drop back bite.
