try looking at the paste coils ,
these are like using a hair rig but looks a bit like a spring , your paste simply moulds into the coil , with your hook being left bare , as they suck in the paste they aslo suck in the hook
for a first time paster this might help you a bit ,

try mixing some egg white into your mix, this will help bind it together

IMO for a angler new to paste fishing try the following.
half fill a three pint bait tub with green swimstim 3mm pellets ( some batch's vary in colour make sure they are the dark green) poor and cover by about 15mm with boiling water and leave to soak for 10ish min, after soaking mash the pellets with a fork untill the pellets are all mixed into a paste, put into a plastic bag and remove air and place in fridge over night. job done, as you get more experienced you can make the paste sloppier by adding water on the bank and re mixing.
rig wise a preston durafloat 6 is as good as any and a sise 12 eyed 911 on line of your choice, plunb up to dead depth leaving bristle showing add paste the sise of 50pence by folding around hook and lower into position in swim with the aid of a cable tie on pole.
imo this set up will take some beating for a beginner to paste fishing

I use glutten to bind mine.It can be hard to get though.Because it binds so well i can use the paste quite wet. Some people use flour with glutten in but its not the same.Flour stiffens up too much.As for hooks i only use eyed, and whip them around the shank[not through the eye]that way the paste has a bit more to hold on to.A decent mix is swimstim green and ringers groudbait.I mix it 50/50,then add 25% glutten.I mix it quite stiff, put it in a plastic bag and put in the fridge over night.Next day When you open the bag the paste has softened to how i want it.As in everything its trial and error, and when it comes to bites its probably better to let them mess with it for a few seconds untill it buries and stays buried for a second or two, then hit the bite.Too early and theres nothing there, and frustration creeps in.After a while you seem to hit the bites without thinking about it,but that takes time.Learn how to catch on it in shallow water first, fishing in deeper water or further out is a lot awkwarder and harder. As said earlier try and make your own paste as a lot of the shop stuff isnt very good.Nearly all ground down pellets or fishmeal will make a decent paste.Lastly when you come on the site there is a very good article on paste fishing by fred[sorry forgot his last name].Read that and you will be ready.
Good luck
