Default Pole Fishing With Paste

I have recently been converted to fishing with pellets. Am now interested in fishing with paste after I Saw a chap fishing at packington - having a bit of good luck.

So today I have brought myself some Swimstem Amino original ready to use paste. Can someone tell me what size hook and float I should use and basic instrution on how to pole fish with paste?

I will appreciate any help that is given!

You need a long bristled float which you need to set that the weight of the paste takes it down to a dimple. Hook wise I'd go for a large hook say a 14 or even a 12 in some cases. Leave a very short tag of line when you tie the hook as it helps keep the paste on the hook.

When your shipping the paste out either use a cable tie to keep the paste off the water or if its a very sloppy paste pop your hooked pasted into a pole pot and ship out and turn the pole over gently. It takes a long time to get use to fishing paste and at first you'll be constantly shipping in and out as the slightest movement could pull the hook from the paste.

I set the rig at dead depth and under shot the float. You basically use the weight of the paste to cock the float right. If the paste comes off the float will rise in the water. Its a superb method, and just keep at it as once it clicks you'll be bagging up! Dont give up and try not to get too frustrated the first couple of times!!

When you get bites dont strike, just a firm lift should set the hook
Good luck!

I'll second all that, I mix my paste a bit stiff so it doesn't drop off when shipping out, you can buckets of paste in some tackle shops or make your own from pellets

How did you get on Jazzman?

In the future, to save buying expensive shope bought paste, you can make you own by either grinding pellets down to a powder and adding water or as I do, use a large mixing bowl and scald micro pellets, leave to stand for a few mins then mix like ell and add water until you get the consistancy you require. You can also add your own aditives and flavours then to make it you own recipe!

Default Pole fishing with paste.

Hello, tried paste for a while on Sunday but found it disappeared from the hook quite quickly. There was a little movemnt on the float time to time then the float would come up in the water after 20 to 30 seconds. Think it may of been the hook being to small or something. Will be buying some wide gape hooks to see if it stays on better like that.

Suppose it is a case of trial and error until I find the best way to do it.

What I actually did was mould a little lump of paste - about the size of my little finger nail - to the hook without the point showing. I may not of moulded it hard enough or something. Any ideas????

Are these ready made pastes supposed to be quite soft and moist - Swimstim?

And are you supposed to make your own like this too??

Hi Jazzman,

I used either a size 12 or a size 10 Kamasan Animal kook for my paste fishing!

I normally use a lump of paste the size of a 50p coin upto the size of a golf ball!

I then sqwash it between my four finger and my thumb insirt the hook and mould the paste around the hook no need to leave the hook point out because when you get a proper bite (float goes all the way under untill you CANT see it anymore) you strike and the hook pulls right through the paste and hope fully into the fishes mouth!

I find that the Swimstim read made paste is quite stiff!

To make my own i normally put a bit of water in a bait box then add Swimstim green Ground bait to it!

At first i mix it sloppy it soon stiffens up! if its to stiff dip your hands in the lake and roll the ball of paste around it will soon get softer and if its to sloppy coat your hands in groundbait and roll the ball of paste around untill it goes a little stiffer!

Hope This Helps

Any more questions just ask!

Mitch

The paste does come off your hook if not mixed stiff enough but as long as you are fishing dead depth or a little bit over then it doesn't matter as the carp hoover it up and your hook with it, I fished it today and had a net full, most tackle shops sell it in a bucket for a £5, just add hot water, wait to cool a bit them mix and put into ther fridge for when you need it.
