Default Wide gape hooks!!!

Having just got back into fishing i've noticed there seems to be plenty of companies doing a wide gape hook, whats that about?

I was always lead to believe that a hooks size was defined by its gape, and looking at these hooks it seems obvious that a wide gape 20 is just an 18 with a shorter shank (or a wide 16 is a 14 etc etc)
I can understand that with pellets etc being common baits these days a wider hook would be better but why dont they just sell a short shank 18 as an 18 instead of selling it as a wide gape 20.

So can anyone explain why? Or is it companies just trying to fool anglers into thinking there getting something there not.

On the other hand i suppose someone might just start trying to sell a size 24 as a narrow gape 22!!!
