Wow, shocked and stunned and very sad. What a brilliant bloke he was.
Two memories stand out:
Him matching me and Brian Gay all night in a hotel before a Six Nations. We were drinking two pints of Murphys to every bottle of red wine he had.
Next day, I was taking some pictures of an Irish angler in action and Bobby walked (as he has every right to) straight through my shot. I said "talk about total eclipse", but got no response from him.
Later that day, as we were in the press pit waiting for podium shots of the winners, an arm went around my neck and I was dragged on my a**e around the gravelly car park with a high pitched Irish lilt in my ear going: "I'll give you total eclipse you f***ing c**t!"
I imagine the best send off he could have would be for Willy Wheeler to win the World Champs this year, that would have made him the proudest and happiest man in angling.
To anyone from the Emerald Isle reading this; you've lost a great big, warm-hearted, smashing feller, anglers throughout Europe will be very sad to hear it.
