Bobby was a great guy. I have fished with him many times in Ireland and we always had a great craic!

He will be sorely missed. My condolences to his family at this sad time.

I understand it was a sudden thing, hopefully he didnt suffer much.

I can remember Bobby fishing on the Erne (i think) in the old match fishing programme on BBC2, it was a major match to win in those days and Bobby was drinking a can of beer during the match.

A major loss to match fishing

RIP Bobby.

I would like to pass on condolences to the family and friends of Bobby from all at the Leinster Federation and the National Federation of Ireland. A true champion and legend in Irish match circles, and will be dearly missed R.I.P.

Wow, shocked and stunned and very sad. What a brilliant bloke he was.

Two memories stand out:
Him matching me and Brian Gay all night in a hotel before a Six Nations. We were drinking two pints of Murphys to every bottle of red wine he had.

Next day, I was taking some pictures of an Irish angler in action and Bobby walked (as he has every right to) straight through my shot. I said "talk about total eclipse", but got no response from him.
Later that day, as we were in the press pit waiting for podium shots of the winners, an arm went around my neck and I was dragged on my a**e around the gravelly car park with a high pitched Irish lilt in my ear going: "I'll give you total eclipse you f***ing c**t!"

I imagine the best send off he could have would be for Willy Wheeler to win the World Champs this year, that would have made him the proudest and happiest man in angling.

To anyone from the Emerald Isle reading this; you've lost a great big, warm-hearted, smashing feller, anglers throughout Europe will be very sad to hear it.

Excellent memories there Steve, he will indeed be missed,

I always looked at him as the Alex Higgins of Fishing the loveable rogue that was top of his trade.
