what i do would be to rack it first then fish over the top then you could fish knowing that it was free of weed in that area

fish it on a night or early morning.

as for the weed you just have to plumb up carefully.

ok thanks for the reply i was thinking of using bread or sweetcorn as everyone says maggots bury in the silt to fast or do you think using dead maggots would do well also do you use dead or alive on the hook

Hi Rummins123
Are you using rod and line or the pole?
The reason I ask is that its ‘easier’ to search the peg dragging your plummet to identify any ‘weed free’ areas on the pole. Having said that, where there’s weed cover, there’s generally fish to be found.
If the peg is wall to wall blanket weed, plumb up and set the rig at say 4-6 ins shallower as a useful starting point.
What are you targeting and what rigs are you using?
As Woodhouse suggests, using punch is a good idea as it will ‘settle and sit’ on the top of the blanket weed. Alternatively a light groundbait, either mixed dry are very sloppy will also produce a lingering cloud and also carpet the weed.
Never used the dead mag on there myself, but as well as the punch, a steady little and often trickle of pinkie or mag usually provokes bites. Yep, some will bury into the weed, but those tincas will investigate and poke their noses through the weed beds to intercept falling free offerings.
There’s also a decent head of silvers – roach, rudd, perch along with skimmers – to be caught on most stretches of the Wyrley & Essington. Often these will feed mid water/above the weed this time of year.Get these going and often a bonus fish or two will also put in an appearance somewhere during the session
Out of interest, what stretches are you fishing?

anywhere between united kingdom pub and roughwood theres a healthy head of tench around here so im using bread flake
i was woundering if there is a good flavour to use on breadflake so those little tincas can sniff it out instead of relying on them using just sight

Know it (relatively) well

I know of a guy who swears by putting a drop or two of vanilla essence in his punch crumb and sealing it in a plackie bag overnight to 'infuse'

Comes in little bottles from the 'baking' section in supermarkets............might be worth a try

Are there any trees overhanging / bushes in the water as you might find the weed to be less near these areas. Other than that I would definately get a rake and rope and clear a spot for yourself, often the distrubance and sturring up of the bottom will bring loads of fish into your area to investigate.
