Question Whips

What are fishing whips for? On what occasions would you use one? I have noticed two different sorts of whip, one with a ring eye and the other, which is elasticated. Are they capable of holding carp or are they just for silver fish only?

most whips are aimed at fishing to hand properties, for silver fish. The ringed eye used to be the old way of attaching the line to the end, nowadays it's normally a fine carbon tip spliced into the section which is either a connector or two pieces of silicone tubining used for line/rig connection. Personally I dont elasticate my whip as i believe it defeats the object of the whips use itself.
Canal anglers are known for using a short whip for fishing in close for small fish using 2-4mtr in length, where on the River Wye 7 or 8 mtr to hand catching dace and bleak.
I personally fish 6mtr to hand on the rivers around here mainly catching roach.
Bigger fish can be landed on a whip but wouldn't go out aiming to do so.
Carp "whips" are normally margin poles which are alot stronger hence fishing for carp with heavy elastics.
