Default Polefishing in the wind

Seeing as it has been very windy round here today thought I would start a thread asking for all you to give your tips for fishing long pole in the wind.

Any special little tips you find help you present your bait properly when it is really windy?

Hello,
I think the best advice i can give is don't bother, leave your pole in the holdall. I wanted to get out today, but decided to leave it, i hate battling the wind, i was hoping it might ease and maybe get out for a few hours.

i dont bother if its too windy. But you'll need a longer line to compensate for the wind blwing the pole, heavier floats too.

Why not fish a bomb over pole line or a small open ended feeder.

the bomb is the way when its as windy as today, feed the pole line as normal then fish a small bomb over it.

i just use a hevier floats and a longer line between the floats and tip and feeding you will find there will be a undertow on the lake so your feed wont be where u put it so u fish a couple a feet each side of where u put your feed

Fished on thorne today simon and their were white horses on it . You could not fish past 7 mts so just fished a bomb over the 13 and 16 mts line . A spray bar is very efficient in the wind when its not to strong , but sometimes you've got to give in to it . Also layed a foot and half on bottom and this can get you some bites

Just got back from High flier we had 60mph winds today with heavier gusts thrown in

fishing anything longer than 6 metres was impossible and most threw bombs or feeders out.

I percivered with 6 metres and walked my end of the lake sadly I was at the wrong end and my 73lb only got me sixth but heres what I did it looks clumsy people will look at you in dis belief but try it.

Firstly 4x12 in the 5 foot of water is normaly enough I used a 1.25 gram float this was a strung bulk set up I slid 4 no 8 stotz up to around 10 inches below my float
I added 2 no 8 shot above my float half way between float and pole tip and used 18 inches of line between tip and float, instead of 6, the 4 stotz 10 inches below my float made the float react like a super long float and added stability.

it sat there perfect where the 4x12 skated through like a stick float

The back shot ensured my line was under the water at all times the only real trouble was the huge powerfull gusts that just blew the pole clean out of the water

The other thing I do is add two extra sticks and fish the same line just down stream so the wind blows down the pole instead of side on.

It was so bad today the keepnets were trying to blow up the bank

JC

Very well done justin case , like the one with the shot just under the float , have to try that . Sometimes i slide a bit of silicon sleeve over the bristle then put another bristle on top to create an extra long one , shot the float down and this gets the body right under the water out of the wind

Justin you are alot braver than alot of anglers, I am sure we all fish too light with floats these days and I am making a concious effort to use the heaviest float I can get away with these days - after all it is very rare to get a totally still day.

As for backshotting I have started using a foot of leadcore line - you know the stuff the carpers use to keep their rig flat on the bottom and having this straight off my elastic, it works like a charm - all you have to do is dangle it under the stuface and you get perfect presentation.

Its not brave Simon I just get frustrated knowing if I can present a bait im going to get a bite. and I rate presentation at around 80% of the art of angling.

I look at all the guys moaning their float is skimming across the surface, and all the "I cant fish in this comments" and think to myself it doesnt have to be like that, the species I was fishing for are pigs the float goes under regardless of size, look at some of these pellet wagglers but there was a definate drop in bites when the float was zipping down the lake, Im sure they look at the bait tripping bottom on a lake and think thats not supposed to be moving

My rig looked completely wrong but it worked, to be frank though I should have gone bigger and in them conditions again I will, the hardest part was fishing with 18 inches to two foot of line to eliminate the whip from the wind, it results in a lot of missed bites, I think the fact everyone around me either went home or DNW nailed the point.

I read an article about the leadcore I was thinking about having a shot at that but it looks a little to permenent a set up, adding shjot does the same but no where near as tidy
