first thing i would do is bin the line..get your self a 3lb for canal and maybe a 5lb for the lake.......use hook lengths on the canal about 1lb 8 oz and 3lb on the lake....that way your out lay is really minimal....you should still catch a few .... lots of good articles on angling all over the internet .. my last advice is go watch and talk to other anglers they will put you right and hopefully you can take it from there

hi pricey,a size 20 is about right on the canals and for the pools if you are goin to be fishin baits like meat, corn and pellet i would fish a size 16 and for paste fishin i would fish a size 14 or 12 dependin on what size fish u were catchin.

hope this helps u a bit mate.

I think you should be looking to purchase a more suitable rod, the 8 foot rod you have is probably a bit short and a bit too strong for ledgering on canals, the line strengths you have on your reel lead me to think that it was probably used for carp fishing, a good starter rod is a John Wilson Avon rod which has two top joints one for ledgering with a spliced quiver tip in it and a normal top that covers float fishing.
