Hypocrisy
Why is it that commercial fishery owners state that keepnets can only be used in matches for. fish welfare reasons.Bollux!,they run matches virtually every day on these venues ,fish are not only kept in keepnets but also dumped in the weigh sling day after day,yet a pleausure angler cant use a keepnet-hypocrisy!

With any fishery rules if I dont like them I dont go there. Every angler as different views, so fishery owners have different views to. If I owned a fishery I would not allow them to. The main reason for this is in the summer months when you have the ocassional angler who go about 3 times a year they will just abuse the rule keeping fish in the net for 10 hours etc. Also as a fishery owner you are leaving yourself open to poaching.
Avonangler you dont have to go to venues where keepnets are banned, find a venue which allows them. But I bet its no where near good as the venues that dont allow them.
My apologies if im wrong.

I,m not saying you,re wrong, for that very reason i dont fish commercials but the reason for net bans on pleasure fishing does,nt hold water (no pun intended)you will see more dead fish at certain commercials after a match,i,m talking about venues that are overstocked with undersized fish, that have matches on them most days where the fish are held upwards of 50- 100lb+ plus in each keepnet in shallow water esp. in summer then tipped into weigh nets-yeah thats fish welfare! Also match anglers pay less per peg fee per day (Although, granted, these anglers are probably more lucrative for fishery owners)than pleasure anglers but have more options i.e use of a keepnet,it smacks of double standards,i could go on but dont want to turn it it into a pissing contest, its just my 2pence worth, however.

sorry avon angler i didn't mean to be curt but thought it would give an insight into the previous debate. it used to be an issue with me but i only fish commercials in our club matches or practices sessions for them. my pleasure sessions are generally on canals and rivers..........use a net if you like and often get the place to yourself on natural venues and i wouldn't go near a commercial during summer holidays if peace and quiet is what your after.

I agree with you in principle Avonangler, although I can see the issue of fish in nets all day being a welfare problem & the poaching (which I hadn't thought about), I suppose by-passing the net dip could be another issue.
But I think your point was about hipocracy - 50-60lb+ of fish in nets for however long can't be fish friendly can it< & neither can the way they get dumped into the weigh sling.
This also raises a point about barbed hooks which you probably use on rivers ? (I don't use the horrible things anywhere). It funny how pro bardbed anglers argue that they don't damage the fish yet all commercials ban them... & good on em.
Maybe I shouldn't go fishing at all if I'm concerned about fish welfare but I do, all I can do is not fish somewhere if I don't like what I see.
I once fished Lindholme, which seems to have come along famously these days, but 5-6 yrs ago one particular lake looked about 2ft deep at the most & was solid with fish, you couldn't fail, turned my stomach & I haven't been back - yes I know, they haven't missed me ! But the point is as someone else has said, if you don't like the rules or anything else about a fishery... don't go.

Good point about the barbed hooks Ian B. yes i do use them if i,m fishing the worm on a river as i like my bait to stay on and i would,nt deny that they are potentially more harmful to fish esp. in the hands of novices and yet i see more mouth deformities in carp than than i do in river fish, far more! This is probably due to the fishing pressure,i.e speed fishing, skull dragging, landing fish as quickly as possible, carp being caught day after day, like i said i dont fish these places anymore but my son does in junior matches ,ok i admit i,m on a bit of a rant about this one,i,ve done my time on carp matches and eventually got so bored with it i contemplated giving up fishing completely as several people that i know have done.Oo er i,ve gone a bit off topic on this 1- apologies to all.

I am a carp angler and I have also fished rivers a lot in my time, it seems to me that you started a thread and couldn't get your own way so you half heartedly tried a smart insult to carp anglers, I.E. cerabrally challenged carp baggers, the definition meaning (in jocular imitation of political correctness) (Of a person, of low intelligence; stupid.) I do not class myself as stupid because I fish for carp, and on the point of needing barbed hooks for worms I fish worms on a non barbed hook, I fished all the big opens on the severn and the avon in my time and won a few without barbed hooks, so perhaps you should think before you call someone cerebrally challenged.
