Failing, please help
Hello,
Last year I started to try and fish properly and had some relatively decent success at Tunnel Barn on the bottom pool, but this year has gone to the dogs, I've fished the top pool and caught sweet FA and the club pool (I think) with the same result, I fished Blythe Waters today and had caught one tench and a cold.
I know Tunnel Barn is pretty idiot proof, I use a either a stick float or a waggler, tried sweetcorn, stawberry sweetcord, bread and red maggotts! Nothing!
I think I'll take up gardening instead...

Dont worry too much John...we all have bad spells.
Like Sumo said most places seem to be off a bit. Its probably down to spawning and the weather not settling for any length of time.
Things will settle down a bit soon (I hope) and your catch rate will improve.
Keep going, dont give up and most of all keep posting here at TA and we will do our best to help you out.

Do not worry John, I have been back fishing since 1990 now and I still struggle, I get absolutly nowhere, but what great days I have just getting out there and learning. Watching all around me catching does not bother me, just fished a match where the winner had 190lb, what did I have 23lb, who cares as long as you enjoy the day out.
Don't give up.

Try not to let it get you down mate, local knowledge and info helps when fishing places like Blythe and tunnel. Blythe can be notoriously hard and you can draw a flyer there and fish it totally wrong if you put your bait in the wrong place. You often catc in the last 2 hours of a match there. Try fishing down the edge with meat late in the day or if you pm me i will tell you a couple of pegs to fish. Tunnel has its good and bad days but on the bottom pool meat will work as there are some big fish in there, again fish to features.

Hi John,
Hopefully you'll be getting a few by now. It can be very difficult to work things out when you first start fishing.
I would suggest you stick to maggots and be happy to get bites and catch fish. Any size, any type will do so you can learn how to feed, how to play fish etc. The key to it all is feeding correctly.
The short cut is to watch someone else who is good, get someone to watch you and tell you where you're going wrong, or watch a film to see exactly how to feed.
I know from past experience that there are loads of fish to be caught at Blyth by fishing maggots close in. Plumb the depth and set a light float to fish with the hook just touching bottom.
If you get bites that you can't hit, try shallowing up, 'cause the fish have probably moved up in the water in the dash to be first to your feed.
Feed 10 or 12 maggots every couple of minutes and the fish will come.
You'll need to buy 3-4 pints of maggots to last 4 or 5 hours. Floats should be slim pole floats, even if you're using rod and line. Something like a 4x10 or 4x12 float is plenty heavy enough to drop off the rod end.
Put all the shot within a foot of the hook, this will make bites easier to see and get the bait down quickly to where the fish are. Shot the float so only a quarter of the bristle is showing.
Hope that helps for now. I'm sure that approach will work at TBF as well.
Let us know how you get on and don't be afraid to PM if you need more help.
Steve

Thank you all for your help and advice, I tried a small place called Dingle Fishery near Coleshill, it's a beautiful place. I popped down after work for a couple of hours, pulled out a half decent bream and the carp (pictured) I don't know what weight it is, but I felt bloomin' good pulling it out!
I'm going back on Friday afternoon with a couple of pints of red maggots and a loaf of bread!

Just keep plugging away John and things will come good for you i'm sure
As has been said knowledge of where your fishing and how to fish it are the main things you need.
You're not the first and won't be the last angler who has some bad sessions. I've fished a few waters i've never fished before and have struggled to get a bite, even though I know my Rigs, Bait etc work perfectly well on venues i know inside out.
