Default Hooklength's

How do you tie the loop to loop? I am a big fan of using hooklengths but have been buying the rig's pre tied. I do tie my straight through rigs but would like to start making all of them. Any help would be appreciated.

For carp I use loop to loop - the mainline of rigs needs to be more durable, with lumps though I will go stright through. Roach fishing I use knot to knot so there is no loop and no play in the hooklength.

How do you tie the loop to loop though? I have tried how I think it works but no joy.

Double over the last 6" of your line and slide your fingers along it to make a point at the end of the doubled bit. That point will make tying it much easier later. Now take the doubled over bit and twist it back over itself to make a circle of doubled up line.
You should now have a circle of doubled up line ending with a flattened loop at one end and the mainline plus a tag end nearest to you.

Three options now:
1. pass the flattened or pointed end (the closed end) through the circle and tighten the knot.
2. to make it stronger, pass the pointed end through the circle twice and tighten.
3. before passing the pointed end through, twist the circle once more. This is a bit more tricky at first, but a lot easier once you get the hang of it.

Both No2 and 3 give you a figure of eight knot, which is stronger than a standard loop knot.

To start with, get a spool of cheap line (perhaps free line from a magazine) and tie big loops in 8lb line. As you get it worked out, try stepping down to lighter lines and tying smaller loops.
Remember to wet the knot well before you pull it tight so you don't give the line friction burn. And, when you are pulling the knot tight, you should be able to slide the circle towards the closed end to make a smaller loop, but again, it will need practise.

Steve - alternative you can get the Sensas loop tier - which is magic! Just go in your local tackle shop and get one - get them to show you how it works, they produce the smallest of loops and I have never had touble with them even on freezing clod days when your hands are shivering.

Yes the Sensa loop tiers are great, I tied mine by hand for years until someone put me on to these. The loops are small and the knot stength is excellent, they take a little bit of getting use to but I'm sure you will be pleased with the result.

Seen Des using one and put a magazine article together saying they are a vital bit of kit. But it's just one of those things where you think: "I tie them OK, so why spend the money?"

Actually, I should probably get one 'cause if I took that attitude to everything I would never be using half the gear I use now!

Round my finger once then twist the tier round twice, I think the instructions that came with it say three times with thick line but I've never found a need.
