Roach,,, What Line Dia,,,
I am going to make up some rigs for a session this weekend and as I am targeting the above I had thought of using 0.11 main line with a .06 hooklength and finished off with a #18 B911 Kam hook.
Now this I am sure is ok for fish up to about 1lb but there are a few larger lumps getting about 2-3 lbs and I am just wondering if I am going in too light? I will be using white holo elastic so this will give me an amount of give but I have never gone this light before,,
Anyone do alot of light weight fishing that can offer advice will be really appreciated.
Paul.

The set up what you suggest is not balanced at all . With the white laccy and 911 you dont want to be less than .10 because the laccy is to strong for .6 . If you want to catch roach and the odd lump maybe go for .8 hooklength to say a mustard canal seed and say a preston blue (5) through 3 sections . .6 hooklenghts are really for 2/3 elastics . Hope this helps

Following good advice on this forum I used 0.08mm hooklength on a 3-5 elastic for silvers & landed a bonus carp of 4lb. That was in the winter though, fishing light a few weeks ago cos the carp didn't want to know, one changed it's mind, took the bait, bolted & snapped me - do carp go on steroids at this time of year or something !

Having conducted experiments in the depths of winter while bloodworm fishing for roach -
0.06 and 0.08 - absolutley no difference in catch rate, therefore use 0.08
What does make a BIG difference to the number of bites, when fishing for roach the main thing to think about is the hook weight, a 911 is far too heavy in my opinion, you should look at the Gamakatsu Greens - these are spot on for this time of year for roach fishing and if you use a 4-5 elastic then you will stand every chance of getting out a lump if you hook one.

0.08 hook length will be fine or if they are really having it you can step up to 0.09 or 0.10,either a mustad canal seed or the mustad as08 barbed either 18/20, or as one a bung states a gamakatsu green or the slighty heavier gamakatsu black

well i use 0.10 with b911 size 20 hook with a no 5 laccy set light and had nice tench to 1.5lb and carp to 2.5lb while still having roach ov about 1 ounce so i think you dont have to go that light i would use my setup as it gets all that you need to get in..maybe set the laccy as normal and not light like i have it if your worried about not getting the lumps in..but you should be fine

I'm with the guys, 0.8 and a green or black gama, maybe a Kamasan 711 if they really want to have a munch. Oneabung is right, the weight of the hook makes loads of difference, no point having a nicely strung rig with 11's and 12's and the hook simply dragging the bait down to the bottom, also if the suck or blow at it, the weight dampens any movement too. Have a great day..

Where are you fishing M78? Or what kind of fishery?
There are times when you could use 0.12 straight through for roach. A B911 and white hydro might be appropriate then. Alternatively, you may need 0.06 to a hook like the Green Gama (although I use PR30s, one of the only Preston hooks I use) and would then need something more like a 3 or 4 elastic.
If you can describe the fishery, I'm sure we can offer more detailed advice.

Morning,
Greenridge Farm near Romsey, I have fished there once before and there are 4 straight canals and a lake, we will be on one of the canals, 14 meters wide with a depth of around 5ft.
There are a few lumps and a lot of smaller carp but I want to target the smaller roach if possible.
I have the choice of a #5 latex or white Hydro (or both!) as top kits and wanted to use single or double mag or caster as the main bait for the day.
That is about everything I have on the venue,
Paul.
