Default What causes a foul hook ?

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has the answer to the above question? I was fishing yesterday and was using a kamasan b911 size 16 hook with sweetcorn an inch off the bottom, and seemed to get quite a high number of foul hook ups, i was catching small carp upto 2lb with the odd roach.

But couldnt figure out why, as i fish like this quite alot.

Any help or thoughts much appreciated

Why fish an inch off the bottom? While the carp are getting the heads down on the feed you introduced there brushing against your "hanging" corn making your float respond as a bite you then lift n the hook more often than not ends up in the bottom half of the fish. This happens quite a lot when i lift n drop my pellet when pellet fishing. try fishing dead depth or coming a few inches shallower.Hope this helps

my theory to foul hookers especially as you were just off bottom is...that the fish in the swim are eating you loose offerings are head down and causing a disturbance/turbulence of the water ....and your hook bait is going against the fishes flanks and spooking it so as they bolt your hook catches fins scales or whatever ....and you have a line bite or foul hooker........But what do i know

You may just have had too many fish charging around your swim, and dependent on how you were feeding they may have been up in the water, both of which can cause line bites, and subsequent striking ends up with foul hookers, I would look to fish a shallow rig to see if the fish are up in the water start with the shallow rig 6" off bottom and keep shallowing up till you start getting positive hook ups. if you dont get indications at 6" off bottom its unlikely they are up in the water, then try with your depth rig just off your main feed area.
