so many missed bites,
I was fishing a venue yesterday , it was the first time there so after a good look around we decided to fish the lake with the least anglers on,
After setting the depth on both my top sections we got fishing, within in seconds i got a bite.
nothing,,
\it was like this for about 2 hours bite after bite after bite but nothing on the hook end and bait had gone or sucked to death,
My mate on the next peg was having the same problem but in his swim round his float it was like a bubble bath with feeding fish.
when you lift into the bight you could feel the little ding as you pulling the bait out of the mouth, we thouhgt we were striking to hard but even a lifiting slowly there was nothing
No matter what we used corn, soft pellet, past, .but most bites where on corn.
Is there a correct way to hook corn?and past?
i was on a .4 float with line straight throught with a barbless wide gap 14 spade end.
but what fish we caught nothing under the 2lb good day in all

Well if that was happening to me and i wanted bigger fish id change the feed and try feed the little ones off. Or try changing bait instead of maggot use pellet. If you want the tiddlers go down in hook size to say a 18/16.

We tried soft pellet and 4mm/6mm pellet on the band and still the same.
We wanst after the small er stuff as the venue is stuffed with a massive variaty of fish all good sizes.

Could of been you was feeding to much then and the fish were giving you liners and knocking your line and then when you struck you could have been thinking they were sucking and nearly foul hooking the fish. Could loads of reasons. Some times you get pestered by crayfish. But like you said there is big fish so thats the only reason. Change your feeding pattern is the best and dont feed to heavy at the beginning. Because you will have plenty of fish in the area but to much bait to concentrate on your hook bait.

I would have shallowed up a few inches at a time until i started to get more bites that could be hit. As said earlier feeding is the key and there was a good chance the fish were coming up in the water for the dropping bait.

I recently fished a lake in Hampshire and like firststopdawai I kept missing bites. Fishing paste on the pole at dead bottom the bites were either straight under which resulted in carp or tench or the pole float started to look it was being bumped by line bites it would then started bobbing across the surface but never quite going under. I changed hook sizes and fished off the bottom the funny bites stopped but all I was catching were rudd. Eventually the culprit tangled itself in the line and i shipped a signal crayfish to land. Changing to luncheon meat seemed to help as bait lasted long enough for carp to push the the crayfish out of the way. I am not sure if there are any baits that crayfish are not interested in. Do any readers have any thoughts on this?

Yes mate, livebait a 4lb perch.... no more crayfish!
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Did you know that to 'suck' a maggot or corn a fish has to take it into the pahryngeal cavity in it's throat to crush it? Right in it's throat - how the hell do we miss those bites???

If you have the fish fizzing in your peg like a jacuzzi you are probably feeding to much. Use to visit a place very similiar. You literally had to feed 5-10 pellets/grains of corn at a time and you would catch carp after carp if you potted a large amount of bait in, the peg would start fizzing and you would miss bite after bite.
Nothing wrong with fishing pellet/corn. But a size 14 is too big. In summer when fishing corn i use a size 18 MT 3 and just nick the corn through the hard point. The secret to fishing corn and catching and not missing loads of bites is to simply plumb up to dead depth, then shallow your rig by an inch and put a grain of corn on, ship out and the weight of your corn will sink your float, if you have shotted your float right.
Then just keep adding depth until the pimple of your float is just sticking out of the water. Now you have an ultra sensitive rig, which willl hit far more bites. Float wise if i am fishing at distance on the pole i use a karpa chimp, the lightest conditions will allow me to use. For closer in work i use tubertini deltas. Most important, when you get a bite don't strike like Zorro, a gentle lift is all you need.

I've had this the last two matches I have fished, Potted in about 20-30 pellets and "boom" the swim came to life like a jacuzzi! I shallowed up to half depth and was getting a skimmer a chuck with the odd carp but only when the bubbles were not so bad.
If the bubbles are really intense then it stands a good chance it's skimmers especially up in the water. You will get lots of liners and find it really frustrating as you wont hit many but once you find the depth they want to feed at you'll be a busy lad!
Like has been said, cut the feed down and trickle it in after that, I had much better results doing this by feeding 5-6 pellets/corn and really get them competing, won't take long for the carp to bully the smaller fish out of the way.

if you start missing alot of bites shallow up an inch or two, also use lighter line/hooks/and laccys,
you might of been bumping them all off.
if that dsnt work. you might be getting a load of line bites, try not striking untill the float is buryed for a few seconds.
if that dosn't work i have no idea, maybe sharpen your hooks or somethink?
