English style Match fishing/angling scene
I am trying to do a bit of research into other countries that have a similar match fishing scene to ours. I want to get a general idea of what types of fishing there are in as many countries as possible. What types and approaches to angling dominate in any given country? E.g lure fishing or bait fishing, if bait fishing types of bait used for what type of fish.... fished in what manner?
This may sound a bit complex so I will give an example. I live in Japan and the type of course fishing here that is most similar to ours is Herra buna fishing(F1). However all people fish in a near identical way using paste fished shallow or on the deck with whips and they don't feed anything!! So it's hook bait only!!
My idea of the States is that it's mainly lure fishing.
Any information or experiences, places to look for info or anything related to this topic would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Andy

Andy, I think that the biggest difference in UK angling is that in coarse fishing it is STRCTLY catch and release! I fished a lot in South Africa, and no-one returned fish unless it was undersize!

Hi Andy
I'm from South Africa, there are several facets of freshwater angling here, namely:
Bank angling - essentially ledgering but with two rods and are allowed two hooks per rod
Match angling - same as Uk but we only float fish, pole & waggler no feeder fishing
Carp angling
Artificial lure
Boat angling
Fly fishing
Bank angling is by far the largest facet as this is the way most pleasure fishermen fish.
By the way kleinboet most of the competition anglers in SA do catch and release it's mostly the pleasure fishermen that catch for the pot.

Hi Andy
I would agree with your assessment of the USA, its nearly all lure fishing or fly for them.
The funny one is Europe, although we have the hotbed of match fishing on the continent, the vast majority of anglers you see from France to the former soviet block will be using a telescopic rod or 5! They will have a huge float or bell on the end like a sea angler, and will be paying little attention to the gear for most of the time.
I have fished matches in France, Italy and Spain ( with expats ) and when you meet match anglers they are just like the UK, very keen and well prepared, but the vast majority like the pike, zander and catfish for the pot I guess?
Cheers....Mark

Are there many fisheries in Europe like the commercials in this country? Does anybody know?
If we take France, Italy, Spain or any other main fishing country in Europe. What type of fisheries are there? What's the main target species and how do people fish for them?
Thanks for the replies lads.
Andy

There are a few fisheries similar to our commercials throughout Europe, but not many. A place in Hungary, for instance, gives huge carp nets in their annual carp match, mainly to waggler or method feeder, but loads of carpers fish the match as well as match anglers. 300k is often the winning weight on a two day weight match and Tamas Walter usually wins it. One year I will get to take him on!
I suspect our fairly mild weather helps that type of fishery. We don't get the extreme winter cold that other places get, even if they are further south.
In Italy they are called Carpodromes, think it's similar in Germany.
India has plenty of 'English Style' fishing opportunities, it's just that not many people know about it. Wait until my film comes out...

So the "Carpodromes" are the fisheries Steve? If so how do they fish for them mate?
Is it the same type of baits we use here? Meat, corn, pellets, maggots etc?
Is the size of thier commercial scene as big as ours?
Thanks
Andy

The Carpodromes are heavily stocked carp waters, but I think they are usually deeper than we are used to in the UK.
Stickymag is a top bait, but pellets are being used more often now. Depends on the rules the match is being fished to, as only live baits are allowed on the hook under International rules.
I think they cram them in as well. Not quite like in the Far East, but probably only 5-10m between pegs, sometimes fishing pairs in the same peg.
This is all second-hand knowledge, I have never fished in or reported from Italy. India, Hungary and Croatia I know more about.

In Spain its a mixture of river, canal and man made reservoirs. I haven't seen any commercials there or in France for that matter.
Spanish match anglers are very good at carp match fishing, anyone who has ever fished the Toledo canal could fish the severn on the pole and think it was a breeze!
The dams where we fish are full of carp, barbell and bass with the odd trout too. It's mostly method fishing although sometimes pole or monster wag up in the water works better, depends on the wind.
I worked in South Korea for a while and they too have small commercials, with people sitting no more than 15 ft from each other catching small carp and carp lookalikes, and they simply buy a ticket for the tackle and three hours fishing and then go!
Cheers...Mark
