Is the button on the side of the reel pretty sure it is, and it does exactly what it says locks the gears to allow the removal of the line pick up cup, once you have removed the cup the spool will be exposed.

Casting is easy just dab the spool with your index fingure and the line will automatically fall against it and be ready to cast.

No mate the line is feed through the centre of the outer cover and when the reel is turned less than half a turn the pick up pin or pins if it has two engage the line. You have got one of the least complicated reels manufactured, only a centre pin reel is simpler. The only draw back to the Abu reels is the tendency for the line to go behind the spool, I only ever put 50yds of line on the spool to help it lay flat on the spool, do not be tempted to overfill as this makes the problem worse.
