Angling on TV
Hi all,
So other than the progs on Sky, does anyone have any thoughts on the coverage that Angling gets (or doesn't get) on the TV (standard/digital/online)...?

My thoughts are there isnt enough coverage on terestrial TV its low at best, we get the odd program but usually old or out of fashion,
It would seem Sky sign up anything new as they have the funds, with the recent introduction of digi boxes I was hoping that one or two of the channels would have some additional coverage but unless discovery joins the freeveiw era I doubt this will happen.
To see Fisho or the world champs on terrestrial TV would generate a huge audiance in my opinion, or even fishing teach ins by people like Bob Nudd Steve Ringer etc etc would be great veiwing.
I last heard there was 2.2 million people that participate in angling more than that go to footie on a saturday, thats got to be worth something for advertisers be it product placement or regular adverts.

The World Champs have been on terrestrial TV in the past, last time was in Spain when Nuddy won it I think. I doubt whether enough people watched it to make the TV companies bother again.
I think there are not enough anglers who are prepared to watch anything other than the type of fishing they're interested in. That 2.2 million figure may be fairly accurate, but will include all types of angling discipline and anglers who only fish once a year, is it possible to make a programme to appeal to every type of angler?
I'm in the planning stage of a new type of film, but will not bother trying to pitch it to TV, the only way I'll do anything worthwhile with it is to sell direct to the angling public on DVD. Maybe we should vote with our remote controls and swith off the TV and go and fish instead...

I agree and disagree I beleive with the changes in technology and thats from a filming point of veiw as well as promotional, and the ability to shoiw detail in great depth I honsetly feel its worth another shot.

Channel 4 took a gamble on Bob James some time back Im sure you remember the program it wasnt just fishing it was his way of life they had good ratings, Jack Hargreve, Out of Town was a fantastic module and a great watch, Pick the right Host and I beleive things might be different in this day and age

I think if your new type of film is specialised then yes you have probably chosen the right method, but as times change and the setting up of TV companies and buying a channel becomes cheaper I think it will swing in the other direction.
Just out of interest Steve have you thought about pay for veiw pod cast type set ups for your DVD's a one off payment for download ?
But to answer the thread starters questioin its a simple no from me its a module that can be tapped into to great potential look at Keiths show very good but you have to pay for it
JC
Oh and are you the same Steve that done the fishing in India article this week ? very good read

Yep Justin, that was me, thanks for the compliment.
Having covered several World Champs and other International events, it saddens me that more match anglers in this country are not really interested. The nagazines are slowly realising that the readership doesn't really care about the premier fishing match, so they are cutting back on the way it is covered.
We (V2V Angling Productions) were thinking we could put a film together about the World Champs, but have decided that it just wouldn't sell the kind of numbers we need to make it worthwhile. To make a production pay, we have to sell 1,000 and I don't think we would even sell half of that.
Pay per view downloads are on the way on our site, along with a few other options for accessing information. We have run a couple of demos and just need time to build up a catalogue before we release them.
I thought Charles Rangeley-Wilson's series was very entertaining and would welcome more of the same, but I really don't think TV companies imagine the figures would make it worth their while. It is probably a question of changing attitudes to angling as a sport first and then more programmes might follow.
I see a long and rocky road ahead, but I'm already on the path, so here goes...

just the mention of out of town and jack hargreaves has brought a tear to my eye. if you could capture the feeling that out of town brought you would be on a winner. i was transfixed by the presentation and content it was like they had made it especially for me. your right get the right host not a 'celebrity' but a naturally informed angler john wilson is ok but wont be everyones cup of tea. sadly though i dont think angling is mainstream enough to merit a slot on a major channel and after all there are plenty of digital channels etc that could present it.
