Scarborough mere.
today me and my angling buddy went to the mere as its local to us.We got there at about 10 o`clock not the early start i wanted but a few hours fishing is better than no fishing at all.so we set up the conditions were good, overcast skys, not to hot or to cold.So on goes the cage feeder and a halibut pellet for the hookbait,in she goes....and we wait and wait no joy, why thinks me pulled it in to re bait loads of weed on my feeder end hook length.I put a pop-up on to bring it up off the floor changed the hookbait, took off the cage put a method on... still nowt. my mate has to go into town keep a eye on me rod sez he, no worries sez me,off he nashes,5 mins later his rod gives it large so up i jump strike into it and after about 20 secs i see whats on the other end a small brown duck. i felt so bad cos i had to bring it in to take hook out of it, anyway i got her in and she must have known i ment no harm cos she didnt try to struggle or bite me took hook out and she was off no worse for the experience. i blanked me mate blanked the only thing caught was a small brown duck... fishing eh. Rich

scarboro mere
I have heard there are a number of good size pike in the mere, do you know of any fish to come out of the mere recently, I fished the mere last year just for pleasure near a boat house, plenty of prech and bits, but it looks a good pike venue whats your local knowledge, I live in Hull but have a caravan in pickering any other pike venues you are aware of around pickering area.

I remember going to scarborough as a nipper on holiday, about 1974 ish.It was a major UK holiday
destination & thousands went. The highlight of the week, saw a "battle of bittain" take place on the
lake, with loads of RC german destroyers drifting about, smoke coming out the back of them!.The
tanouys blared out german u-boat sirens-WOOOO-WOOOO & the crowd of thousands bayed for blood!.
Next,on what looked like 100lb fishing line, stretched across the lake from tree to tree.model spitfires came hurtling down on the offending "hun".When over a german craft, the sound effects
of a bomb dropping filled the air!,then "bang" and(really amatuerish),about 5 seconds later,a firework
(banger) went off on the destroyer & it sank,to a huge cheer.HOW TIMES CHANGE!
Later,yer man Eddie Warring(eeeee,its an up & under) & his sidekick,Stu????(ha ha ha,its the belgians!) did a televised "its a knockout",then a huge firework display-prob 10 airbombs!,but it
seemed huge.GOD!,im getting old.

Oh happy days...used to fish the Mere all the time. Night sessions were fun, my first 100lb bag coming from 'the channel' in or about 1985.
Remember a good mate at the time, Tony Dawes, came down to see how I was getting on and quickly went home to fetch another keep net which I also filled.
Wednesday night matches used to be good some night and crap others. And when it started to weed up, the water became crystal clear and it was almost impossible to catch.
Another good mate, Barry Degg from GB Angling in the town, who i heard sadly passed away earlier this year, was a big pike man and had some beauties, mostly out of the Ski Pond.
And to cap my happy memories: In the 1985 Scarborough Fishing Festival Freshwater match, which was held on the Mere, I drew a plum peg by the little island. Had to wait until the final minute of the five-hour match for a tench on the feeder to win the event.
Oh happy days.....

Barry was a top man Rich, no doubt about that. Used to spend days with him round the top end of the Ski Pond at the Mere. God, it was bloody freezing but he used to knock the pike out. Sad loss to Angling. Rarely make Scarborough these days. Hope GB Angling is still going strong and that Pat is coming to terms with her loss.
