Default Central Heating

Help needed off you heating engineers.

Had a new central heating boiler replaced on thur, worked ok till last night (friday) when I heard a ratteling sound coming from
the airing cuboard, when I investigated it had stopped.Been out all day today and when I got back the house was cold.
Checked all the rads and they where only just warm, except a small one which is located on the landing very near to the airing cuboard that is very hot, this rad does not have a thermo attached.Would I be right to think the pump as failed.
Any help apreciated as Ive got to try and get it repaired

If they are warm at the bottom and cold upwards they need bleeding, sorry can't help much more but I had an experience like that a few years ago.

not a heating engineer mate but have checked the pressure on the boiler? should be set at 1 bar when cold if thishas dropped below this may affected hot water being pumped around the system hope this helps ps if it does need topping up u will have to bleed the system as well

Yep those would be my first (cheapest) ports of call too, check pressure on the guage on boiler (or next to the expansion tank) as tackle 21 says this should be about 1 Bar or 15 p.s.i. when system is cold, much less and the pressure switch will not allow the system to heat up. There should be a valve off the cold water side to allow you to top up to 1 bar (sometimes a flexible filling loop).

Pressure will go up of course when warm.

If rads were bled when new boiler installed I would be looking for drips in case you have lost a bit of water. Another guess is that it was pressurised just to correct pressure at room temp but the very cold snap may just have dropped the pressure low enough to cause problems if the system has been off. Pressure will need to be checked and maybe re-set each time rads are bled as well.

Hopefully it is nothing more serious than this on a new system but sometimes things do fail early

HTH

Eric

You can check any fitters corgi registration on the corgi website, if after that you think they have done a bad job contact corgi who will send an inspector out and ask the engineer who fitted the appliance to attend.Hope you get it sorted out soon.If its a new combi boiler your pump should be replaced under warranty.Good Luck.

Put a screwdriver against the pump and your ear on the other end of it that will tell you if the pump is running. If it is then check the pressure, put it up to about 1.75 and then go and bleed every rad... if that doesnt work then you will most likely have to drain and refill the system as you probably have an airlock - when you had your new boiler fitted did the engineer flush the pipes and rads all round the house because if he didnt then you may as well have not bothered getting a new boiler.

Also when new boilers are fitted then solder can get in the system sometimes and knacker your pump (evident if there is a knocking sound coming from the pump)..... best bet try leaving it all turned off for a couple of hours to go properly cold as I imagine your pump may be red hot..... then fire it back up, put some extra pressure in, check for leaks and then go bleed your rads - there should also be an airlock on the top of the pump try bleeding that too.... good luck chap I had the same problems last year and in the end ripped everything out and re-plumbed it with plastic pipes.
