Default any plumbers

are there any plumbers out there, got a question for you....

When flush toilet the shower trap gurgles and vice versa...when having a shower toilet gurgles as though air getting forced up around u bend.

The toilet outlet to stack is above where the shower outflow joins stack any ideas and how can it be rectified..ie no gurgling etc

cheers

nige

I'll try to explain how i think this works, maybe wrong but.....

On top of the stench pipe is a cap which allows air into the pipe, when water is drawn into the pipe the cap lets in air (toilet flushed, bath/shower emptied)

If there is a blockage, the pipe must be able to draw air in from somewhere and the only other place would be plug holes, shower/bath traps and U bends in the toilet system etc.

This is how it was explained to so i hold no responsibility for its accuracy

Mat is correct, You don't have enough air getting into the system and its creating a syphon

one or two things could be causing this

If you have a sub stack thats a short soil pipe that all the services connect to there is usually a durgo valve ( air admittence valve) on the very top this could have failed and stuck shut, what then happens is when you let water go it sucks air in from the nearest point IE the basin shower or bath you need to find the valve and give it good clean, there is a neoprene rubber seal a drop of silicone spray on reasembly wouldnt go a miss

also some internal stack pipes run up into the loft space and finish there with a durgo valve, you may want to check there.

There are a few tricks you can do to cure this, you could change your trap on the basin to an anti syphon trap they are the same size and will fit straight on to the existing pipework with no real hassle, they will let air in as needed and not let water out.

I hope that helps

JC
