A very interesting discussion. I personally dont mind boats as long as they keep to the speed limits and stay in the centre of the canal. I'm sure that at times the boats can have a positive effect by clouding the water.
The worst experience I had was on the river trent. I was standing in my waders in the river when a boat came past so fast that the bow wave came up over my waders and half my gear was washed away. The problem is, as in all walks of life its the minority that spoil things for the majority.
Interesting to read about the difficulty of steering a boat at low speed, never considered that before but I suppose its obvious if all you've got is a rudder.

Thumbs up Canals need boaters

I agree with Roysy that we need boats for good fishing. Without them clouding the water & being maintained for navigation canals can weed/silt up & go gin clear resulting in poor sport.

With regard to payment we anglers often pay twice to fish a stretch of canal. IE the rod licence which every person needs to have when fishing with rod & line in the UK & either a yearly club membership or a ''dayticket''. There are very few stretches of canal for which the fishing rights are not controlled by a club. The club pays the rent & we individual anglers pay a membership fee on average £30 - £60 for that clubs stretch of canal. If I want to fish another canal i have to pay again etc etc.

Therefore BW takes a considerable amount of revenue from angling clubs nationally which i should imagine is used by BW to maintain the canal network. How much of this revenue is used for fishery work i wonder?

My local canal the Bridgewater Canal in Cheshire is different in that it is owned by the Manchester Ship Canal company & virtually all the fishing is controlled by Warrington AA. Here fishing from boats is not allowed & day tickets are not available. Fishing from the non towpath side of the canal is also forbidden. I was a baliff for WAA for many years & had lots of arguements with boaters fishing from their boats often on the non towpath side of the canal particulary in marinas without WAA membership. A lot of boaters seem to think that a rod licence gave them the right to fish anywere on any canal. Simply not true and worth bearing in mind that if u boated for a week say, from Warrington to Birmingham & wanted to fish every night next to your moored boat. To be a ''legal'' angler it would cost you probably several hundred pounds in club books or day tickets.

Could Moley or one of the other poster's from our boating friends post a link to their boater's forum so that we can have a look @ life on the canal from a boater's perspective.

Hi Larry & Brian and any others who've migrated to our side.

That's why I didn't post a link myself. It started out as one of our regular whinges (cyclists and dog walkers come in for more stick than anglers though), and there are some posts which are quite hurtful and hateful. Anyone reading should really start around page 5 (though there's still one a***hole who goes much too far).

I hope now though, that it has turned into something that could be beneficial to both sides. Although no angler has ever yelled at me personally (which could imply that I've been doing it right), I've already learned quite a bit from this discussion, and quite a few of ‘our lot’ have already realised the error of their ways.

Regards,
Ade.

Yes, infact the canals are shallow all over.
- Our boat is deeper than a lot at around 2ft9", and we often touch bottom, even when in the middle. (but thats another topic, isnt it bw!!)

Unfortunatly i have not seen 'waterworld' yet, as its only broadcast in the central region, and i havnt got around to geting a copy. But several people on our forum have been dicussing it. Quite a co-incedece it was just this week!

But Ridgeacre is right, the amount of infomation hirer's get (although it varys largely on the hirebase in question) is scary.
- As he says, often then get nothing less that shown how to start it, and send on there merry way, possably with a crude video on locks or a handbook of sorts.
- We get the otherside of that, which is that as soon as they get to a lock they dont have a clue, and we have to teach them how its done in order to prevent a huge holdup.
- Its not just hirer's eather, a lot of people are buying new boats for vast amount of money with no prior knowlage, and the boat builders give even less training!

And as i said earlyer, becuase boaters and anglers so very rairly talk to each other, even after 10years on the canal, i still thought giving you room was honestly the best thing to do.

I too urge you to read to the end of the thread on our forum.
- It did indeed start of as bit of a rant, with a load of "humourous" comments about winding up fishermen. But non of its ment that serously, and as you can see in the latter half, people are actaully genuinly interested in doing it best for you.
