Default hook length lengths

hi everyone,
I have had an aweful days fishing today. I fished my usual tactics that usually work. The fishing was not brilliant and everyone seemd to be struggling with a low weight of 16lb winning the match. I usually do well when its hard to fish but for some reason i couldnt get bites. I went 2 and a half hours without one at one point. I took some advice from a guy that does well at the matches, he fishes feeder with about 6 inch hair rig hooklength so i gave it a try. I fished a small cage feeder with the 6 inch hooklength. Do you think this is why i struggled? is this info correct. or should it just go down as a bad day in the office?

James, you need to keep changing things to try and get some kind of response. One day a 6" Hl will work, another, especially if they are cagey, a longer HL may be best.

When fishing for bream on the tip at a enue I fish, fish a 12-18" HL and you wont get a bite, fish 3-4feet, the tip often goes round within a minute of the bait settling.

Fishing has been difficult recently with fish spawing up and down the country. The carp have not nesessarily been feeding for all this time but they have probably been fooding on other fish's spawn/eggs so are not too interested in boring pellets or other angler baits.
