Default Long rod

Just so I don't get confused between genuinely struggling & bad technique, in what depth of water would you opt to move up from a standard 13ft float rod to something longer on a river ?

Depends what the bank's like for casting, if you're out in the water with nothing to get caught on behind you when you cast then you can fish up to 13ft deep with a 13ft rod but to be honest a longer rod is better for the stick anyway for better float control and I'd always use a longer rod for the stick. If fishing the waggler and its too deep, use a slider or fish up in the water.

Anything over 10ft deep ... but the longer rod makes longer casts easier anyway. I have fished 18ft deep at 50 yards comforably with a bolo but thats where there is a strong flow, if it was still water I would prefer my 15ft rod and use a slider as the 20ft rod is a little unweildy. The longer the rod the quicker it picks the line up off the surface as well so thats why the longer rod when fishing the slider at distance.

Thanks lads, the slightly longer rod sounds a better option - just didn't want to look like I was over doing things ('all the gear & no idea' haunts me where ever I go ).
