Completely agree. I'm primarily one of the lads "from the dark side" a Carp angler & Predator angler as well as pleasure fishing for the smaller species. I also run a bait business as well.
I fish to a budget and by no means do I buy tackle or bait that fits the "current trend". I buy rods that do the job, reels that will last a good few years and so on with the rest of the gear. When it comes down to bait I'm even more skeptical. Keep it simple! I completely agree with adding tweaks to boilies but not stating that a new boilie will out-fish the bloke in the next peg due to a new "amino base complex with added hi attract mouse ears extract" boilie.
Don't get caught folks!
Giles.

Getting caught
Giles.
If we combine youre mouse ear extract. With my spicy tune and sperm whale.
Package it all fancy like and get a top angler to endorse it, we could be on a winner my mate.
I'm not trying to be funny here. Thats exactly what the big companies are doing.

I think that a lot of poles are well overpriced but it doesn,t stop the top anglers from endorsing them as they are sponsord by the big firms.as for bait i get 3 tins of corn for 90p from a shop called B an M bargains i also use Bacon grill, and a polish sausage called Polony which by the way is a great bait for carp.why do tackle shops charge so much for a tin of corn anyway surely its just the same as tinned corn you get in high street shops or supermarkets.

Referring back to a few earlier comments
The cost of carbon is crazy,
When you start getting into higher grades like 100ton from a cost perspective its up there with some precious metals, also pole technology is far from finished there are 100's of possibilities out there for new stiffer lighter compositions, but why bring out new stuff every week and kill the market, an example of this is Esselle pole repairs they use a higher grade carbon than the Airity I had repaired,
manufacturers certainly bring out a lot of models but they are spread across the cost spectrum, if you take one of the top companies out there Daiwa, the touney was the flagship for years its only recently been superseeded by the Airity, the G8 was their £1000 pole, again its been around for ages and still hasnt been superseeded, clever companies dont flood the market, those two also happen to be two of the best selling poles ever.
The big companies are in this industry for the long term, if you look at the aerospace industry they are working on new materials all the time we follow closely behind in the angling industry, there are all sorts of super alloys as well as products like delrin and other plastic resins that im sure could be woven into carbon like Boron was a while back,
The bottom line is, that technology has to be paid for by someone, be it for there own design or something they use under license. and thats us the end user.
The main thing is we have a choice we dont have to buy Joes sweetcorn with the nice label, we dont have to buy freds poles because they are 3 grand, there is a product to suit everyones budget.
if the shops were making so much money why are they closing down weekly ?

its all a bit of a laugh really.
i started coarse fishing at the age of 4. at that time it was maggot or worms or cheese. all these baits used to catch fish.
i kept at it and eventually sweetcorn was the in thing round our way in the early 80's. it was new to us, but caught a lot of fish.
then i tried the dark side, got caught up in all the tripe about needing this and that. buying bait flavours and rolling tackle galore for about the price of a house. had perfectly good tackle but needed better so spent yet another fortune. then got fed up and hung the lot up in the garage for the last 4 years.
just making a comeback now and im back in love with tench fishing with lightish gear. but im already feeling the urge to upgrade all the time. ive got a 11 mtr lerc from a boot sale that works absolutely fine. but ive bought 2 more poles!!!
i promised myself that i wouldnt need more seats than my carp chairs and boss platform. then bought a rive.
yep, you could say im the perfect catch for the shops lol.
as for quality of new vs old, i doubt many poles are stronger than my lerc. and ive yet to hold a rod that feels and works better than my tricast trophy stick or tom pickering whisker waggler. i still dont feel the need to upgrade my mitchell 440 or my abu 503 though they would have you believe that its all old hat.

I only tend to look at the adds if I know I need to buy something specific and just don't read the adds for anything else.
Usually when I come to a page full of adds I just turn it.
But if I go in a tackle shop, that is my weak spot lol, can easily walk out with loads of stuff A, I did not go in for and B, I don't need lol.

what a post
yes as anglers we are the ones that are hooked.the mags are full of reviews and new tackle but its all just to fill up the mag as its just a tackle shops posh way of advertising.the baits the rods the poles the reels i mean come on example rods i have a normark titan 2000 14ft ive had it over 5 years still seen nothing to touch it also shimano 12ft 14ft multi stradic feeder again nothing i have used touches it.reels i have the original stradic 4000 gtms enough said(never beaten still same reel just looks nicer)with poles i got to hold my hand up and say maybe once every 3 years i would replace mainly down to worn out.as for luggage ect these items last for ever if treated right.my main laugh is the new incredible pellet waggler rods i have a drennan super tench rod that does this trick with very little effort and its over 4 years old.but the shops need something to sell to us as maggots, worms and hooks aint going to keep them open.
