I'm of the opinion that if they can't see something but can sense/feel it ,they are more spooked by it than something they can see well.

Some years ago when I was flyfishing a bloke gave our club a demonstration on line, and what it looked like under water etc.He had perspex board made up with different brands of line fasten to it and then got is mate to video it under water 3 meters down and the black line (maxima) looked 5 times thicker than the other lines it throws a hue off it for some reason. they where all about the same dia but that maxima did look thick

im with fordy on this one.
thats why i fish a lot heavier these days.
the fish are only interested in the food that they are eatin.so if u fish a line that the fish can see they will avoid it causin less line bites an foul hooked fish.if u fish a line that the fish cant see theres a lot more chance the fish will swim into it an spook a very big shole......

Probably explains why fly-lines are Fluorescent these days!

Black is the colour that fish can see more than any other regardless of light conditions and water turbidity - this is why, if you are fly fishing for trout and getting few bites, you can almost always get a take on a black fly. It often works with pike lures too. Anybody tried black pellets yet?? Or black maggots up in the water ??

I reckon the 'they see it and they are less spooked' theory could be spot on. I used to use braid hooklengths for freelining for carp in my local canal. I used braid as the fish tended to shoot into the reedmace and cut me off if I used mono straight through. One day, there were some fish on the surface, so I put a floating bait on. Bear in mind that the braid was attached via a swivel, so both the hooklength and the swivel were dangling directly beneath the bait..... and I caught fish, and I always caught fish using this method. I assumed then that they just saw the braid (which was green and yellow) as a bit of weed and it worked whether I was fishing close to weed or in open water. Whatever, they certainly weren't spooked by it and it saved me having to grease up the line to get it to float.

The maxima filled underwater is seen by a camera and a human eye, so won't give a true view of what the fish in our swims will see. After all, maxima has been around for many moons and favoured by many as better than many lower diameter lines.

Interesting subject guys...... black hooklengths on the floating pole method from now on then eh ??

sounds iffy to me! always taught to make everything act as natural as possible and as much like the free offerings your feeding.if hes bagging i reckon it,s more likely to be other reasons such as how hes feeding etc.last time i saw a attractive black line it was a seam down a pair of black stockings
