Black is the colour that fish can see more than any other regardless of light conditions and water turbidity - this is why, if you are fly fishing for trout and getting few bites, you can almost always get a take on a black fly. It often works with pike lures too. Anybody tried black pellets yet?? Or black maggots up in the water ??
I reckon the 'they see it and they are less spooked' theory could be spot on. I used to use braid hooklengths for freelining for carp in my local canal. I used braid as the fish tended to shoot into the reedmace and cut me off if I used mono straight through. One day, there were some fish on the surface, so I put a floating bait on. Bear in mind that the braid was attached via a swivel, so both the hooklength and the swivel were dangling directly beneath the bait..... and I caught fish, and I always caught fish using this method. I assumed then that they just saw the braid (which was green and yellow) as a bit of weed and it worked whether I was fishing close to weed or in open water. Whatever, they certainly weren't spooked by it and it saved me having to grease up the line to get it to float.
The maxima filled underwater is seen by a camera and a human eye, so won't give a true view of what the fish in our swims will see. After all, maxima has been around for many moons and favoured by many as better than many lower diameter lines.
Interesting subject guys...... black hooklengths on the floating pole method from now on then eh ??
