April started with my second visit to the talkSPORT radio studio as the guest of Keith Arthur on his superb ‘Fisherman’s Blues’ show - All Things Piscatorial | Your One Stop Coaching Site

I cannot thank Keith enough for the support he has given to me and the site. To be able to promote coaching to the masses via his show has proved to be a huge success – together we have introduced new and returning anglers to coaching from all aspects of the sport – Coarse, Sea and Game.

I have also been out and about doing some roving reporting in Sussex. I was invited to cover a disabled match that a fellow coach was supporting – Graham Cridland. Graham is a very active angling coach who runs the West Sussex Angling Academy at Lake View Fishery.

Level One Coaching

The aim of the Level One Coaching course is to create more qualified anglers who can actively assist Level Two coaches in delivering angling to young people and help provide youngsters with the skills to become the anglers of tomorrow.

The course provides you with an introduction to the principles and practices of coaching safe and ethical angling activities to adults and young people. You will develop an understanding of how to deliver aspects of coaching sessions, normally under direct supervision of more qualified coaches.

The L1CCA is a vocational qualification and provides you with an opportunity to study and be assessed for both the practical and theoretical aspects of coaching angling. The certificate qualifies you to deliver coaching activities, assisting other more qualified coaches in the coaching of the skills and techniques of angling to adults and children. The qualification can be used to generate evidence for a Level 1 N/SVQ in Sport and Recreation, and other vocational coaching qualifications.

The L1CCA has also been matched to the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) Level 1 Qualification guidance and will be a component of the JADB’s UKCC-endorsed coach education programme.

Coaching Angling, whether in an employed or voluntary capacity, is a rewarding and responsible role. The sporting community has expectations of coaches’ conduct and behaviour that must be understood and supported by everybody. Coaches’ behaviour is governed by the JADB Angling Coaches Code of Conduct, a copy of which is provided for reference during your achievement of the qualification.

We are now rolling out the new course from June 2007 and are making it a prerequisite that all coaches undertake the Level One first before progressing to the Level Two qualification. Coaching has a big part to play in the development of the sport and the Level One provides a step on to that coaching ladder.

Become an Angling Coach

The NFA has now confirmed dates for 18 Level One Coaching courses from June 2007 onwards. Courses are available all over the country with further details and how to apply available from the NFA website, National Federation of Anglers - Become a Coach

This is part of the angling’s expansion of the new Level One Coaching courses in a drive to get more people involved in the development of angling and introduce more newcomers to the sport.

Becoming a coach is a great way of giving something back to the sport and helping to attract new participants. Through coaching you can support angling in a variety of ways, including working within angling clubs, delivering angling education in partnership with schools and after school clubs as well as helping with angling events around the country.

Coaching is at the very heart of angling, from the first time you pick up a rod at the local school or club to the World Championship squads competing for medals at the highest level. Tommy Pickering, the Manager of the Ladies World Championship team, is a fully licensed NFA coach and is a strong believer in the value of coaching:

“Coaching is a great way of putting something back into the sport. The reason I became a coach is because I really just wanted to help other people get interested in angling and to help them catch more fish. One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a coach is when you have the ability to pass on your knowledge and experience and, most importantly, put a smile on someone’s face when they pick up a rod and catch a fish for the first time.”
